However, this latest edition, the Nereide Tigris, looks a little further east, drawing inspiration from the ancient trade routes that once connected India to Venice. The stunning Tiger’s Eye stone dial is just as aesthetically impressive as the story behind it.
The Nereide Tigris’ story stretches far beyond Venice itself, as it retraces the ancient trade routes that once carried precious stones, spices and extraordinary materials from India to the Mediterranean. This is why featuring a stone dial on this release just makes sense, as it naturally ties the historical connection to the timepiece and the Italian origins of Venezianico.

Venezianico on the new Nereide Tigris
For the founders of Venezianico, Alberto and Alessandro Morelli, the concept behind the Nereide Tigris was to make the natural phenomenon of Tiger’s Eye the undisputed centre of attention. Tiger’s Eye stands out for its fibrous structure, which gives rise to the optical occurrence known as chatoyancy. This is where golden, amber and deep brown bands appear to flow across the surface as the angle of light changes, creating “an interplay of different reflections.”
A Natural Stone Dial Within A True Dive-Watch Framework
Venezianico’s Nereide line is very much a dive collection, which means the 42mm case carries the signature characteristics you would expect from a diver. From the unidirectional bezel, refined case design, mix of polished and satin-brushed finishing, crown guards and screw-down crown to the 200m of water resistance, all these details help maintain the tool-watch identity of the Nereide, even with the more decorative Tiger’s Eye dial.
I do also like the inclusion of the polished tungsten insert for the unidirectional bezel, which not only adds a refined and highly scratch-resistant element to the case design, as tungsten carries a hardness rating of 9/10 on the Mohs scale, but also matches nicely with the steel case. This allows the full attention to go to the dial, which is the central highlight of this watch.
As mentioned earlier, the dial uses natural Tiger’s Eye stone, a variety of quartz formed over millions of years through a slow geological process. Getting this to watch specifications is no easy feat either, as it requires a complex process of each stone plate being aligned with the direction of its natural fibres before being cut via water-jet technology. And as Venezianico explains, “the stone is then thinned down to just 0.4mm, mounted on a brass base, polished carefully and finally completed with the applied indices and dial elements.”
While the inclusion of the date complication is a natural feature of the Nereide collection, I think it works especially well on this model. I particularly like how it is integrated into the dial. It seems like Venezianico has done its homework, creating a beautifully balanced dial even with a date window, by replacing the 3 o’clock hour marker with this mechanism. Leaving the date wheel white was also the perfect choice, as it naturally acts as an hour marker while still standing out against the Tiger’s Eye dial.
A Proven Swiss Automatic Built For Everyday Reliability
Inside the Nereide Tigris sits the Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. This is a widely used calibre in the watch industry, making it a proven choice for this dive watch. While the Tiger’s Eye stone dial is clearly the visual highlight of the timepiece, the Calibre SW200-1 gives the watch that dependable mechanical foundation. This is also reflected on the caseback, where Venezianico has tied it back to the Nereide story by engraving it with the silhouette of the Nereide submarine.
The movement operates at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800 vph) and offers a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. While the power reserve is a bit under par by modern watchmaking standards, it is enough to be worn as a daily, which, considering the timepiece’s robust build and stunning Tiger’s Eye dial, makes it a well-rounded option for those wanting a diver that offers both practicality and visual character.
Initial Thoughts
The Nereide Tigris, for me, is one of the best releases from Venezianico’s Nereide collection. While previous editions have featured stunning colours, patterns and even aventurine dials, this latest release goes beyond surface-level decoration with the story behind the dial. By connecting Tiger’s Eye to the ancient trade routes between India and Venice, near the brand’s birthplace, it gives the watch a stronger narrative foundation than a simple stone-dial diver.
What I also like is that Venezianico hasn’t turned the Tiger’s Eye story into a dress piece. Rather, it keeps to the brand’s Venetian heritage by imbuing the design into its trademark diver’s watch. The five-link Sansovino bracelet also adds to the allure of the watch. While it could have been paired on a strap, the stainless steel bracelet, with its satin-brushed and polished finishing, complements the warmth and reflective movement of the Tiger’s Eye dial.
When was the last time you saw a dive watch with a Tiger’s Eye stone dial? That is exactly what makes this Venezianico Nereide Tigris feel unique and expressive. It takes the familiar architecture of a 200m dive watch and gives it a dial that feels visually alive and engaging, far more so than what we are used to seeing in this category.
