Watches & Wonders 2026: On the back of the success of the black ceramic Ingenieur 42, this year, IWC gives it a new look in green!

The expansion of the Ingenieur ceramic lineup was always going to happen. At least I felt it was. Given IWC’s work in ceramics and ceramic alloys, the Ingenieur platform was ready for a makeover and additional models in ceramic. Following the release of the black ceramic model in 2025, IWC now introduces the Ingenieur Automatic 42 in green ceramic, building on the same foundation while shifting the overall character of the watch.

The core design and engineering remain unchanged (and if you want to find out more, read our interview with IWC CEO, Chris Grainger-Herr), but the colour introduces a different presence on the wrist, and one that surprised me given I wore the black ceramic last year for a week when we had it for review.

Ceramic With Greater Visual Depth

The transition from black to green ceramic brings more than a simple colour variation, and seeing the watch in person vs the press assets does make a difference with this piece. Producing consistent coloured ceramic components remains a complex process, particularly when multiple case and bracelet elements must match precisely after firing.

IWC carries over the same finishing approach seen on the black ceramic, combining satin-brushed surfaces, sandblasted sections, and polished bevels. In black, these details were more subdued, only coming alive in direct light to create light play across all the surfaces. The green ceramic seemingly introduces more contrast, making the finishing transitions more visible and adding a greater sense of depth across the case and bracelet. The result? A watch that feels more dynamic visually while maintaining the sharp, architectural lines that define the Ingenieur.

The green ceramic seems to give off more light and show the brushed finishes just a little more

One of the standout elements of the ceramic Ingenieur remains its case construction. IWC avoids the typical limitations of ceramic by using a multi-part architecture, incorporating a titanium inner ring that supports the movement and anchors the functional screws from both sides.

This approach allows the watch to retain the proportions of the steel Ingenieur without compromise. The dimensions remain consistent with the 2025 black ceramic at 42mm in diameter x 11.5mm thick x 48mm lug-to-lug and retain the 100 metres of water resistance as expected.

This model has a different wrist presence from the black from 2025

On the wrist, the ceramic construction continues to offer a lighter feel compared to steel. From experience with the black ceramic model, this reduction in weight contributes to long-term comfort without diminishing the perceived solidity of the watch. In some ceramic watches, this isn’t the case, but with the Ingenieur, I feel it is.

Taking The Dial Up A Notch

The dial layout also remains familiar, with the signature grid pattern, applied indices, and a clean three-hand display with the date window at 3 o’clock. The shift to a green dial creates a more cohesive overall design, reinforcing the monochromatic aesthetic of the case and bracelet working as one.

However, the gold-toned accents on the hands, markers, bezel screws, and crown introduce contrast that was largely absent in the black ceramic version. This detail changes the overall tone of the watch, bringing a level of warmth and visual separation that enhances legibility while adding refinement to the dial. And to be honest, this is one of my favourite aspects of this release, the contrasting green and gold.

The dial is typically Ingenieur, and the gold accents break up the monochrome aesthetic well.

IWC could have made this a pure green watch, but I am glad they didn’t, as this would seem to be just a colour change from the black. Instead, those small gold elements mean this watch has an identity all to its own. I’ve said I’m not a huge fan of all black watches, moreover, monochromatic watches in general, as I like a bit of contrast, and thankfully, this gives just enough.

The Calibre 82110 – Consistent and Reliable

Powering the watch is the IWC-manufactured calibre 82110, unchanged from the black ceramic model. The movement features the Pellaton winding system, a 60-hour power reserve, and a frequency of 4 Hz.

The inclusion of ceramic components within the winding system aligns with the broader material focus of the watch, improving durability in high-stress areas. This is a movement designed for reliability and daily usability, supporting the Ingenieur’s positioning as a robust, design-driven sports watch.

Unlike the black model with a tinted sapphire caseback, IWC has chosen to go clean with the green, giving us a clear view of the Calibre 82110, complete with the gold ingot in the rotor with the IWC Schaffhausen logo and motto engraved.

Initial Thoughts

The green ceramic Ingenieur represents a natural progression for the collection. The engineering and design framework established by the black ceramic model remains intact, providing a solid base for further variations.

This release demonstrates the flexibility of the ceramic platform while reinforcing IWC’s capability in material execution and case construction. The introduction of colour adds a new dimension to the Ingenieur, expanding its appeal while maintaining the integrity of the original concept.

Time spent with the black ceramic Ingenieur highlighted how cohesive it was with the integration of material, finishing, and construction that came together in a way that was purposeful. The green ceramic version builds directly on that foundation while shifting the overall expression of the watch. The green ceramic introduces greater visibility and contrast, creating a stronger design statement without altering the underlying architecture.

I’ll leave my thoughts there for now as I’ll be doing a full hands-on review with the watch in the next few months. Stay tuned!
