Upping the sophistication of their Serenade Luna line, Glashütte Original presents a new version of the watch in a blue mother-of-pearl dial.
Overcast weather can really be a bore. This probably sounds redundant from a company based in the ‘Sunshine State’ of Queensland, but our tropical climate sees its fair share of inclement weather.
While cloudy, rainy and stormy days are nothing to get sentimental about, they do change how we perceive our watches. Dull days can make our timepieces seem less brilliant than they are, and can threaten to dampen our enjoyment of them. However, German powerhouse watch brand Glashütte Original might have something to say about that.
If you’re a guy, sadly you’re out of luck for now. Their latest release focuses on the feminine Serenade Luna. Glashütte Original’s newest addition to the collection is what they call the ‘Skyline Blue’, complete with an exquisite new dial colour.
Measuring 32.5mm in case diameter, it’s sized to suit the majority of women. Combined with a 38.12mm lug-to-lug and an 8.9mm thickness, the Serenade Luna Skyline Blue wears in line with the rest of its kin. The stainless steel case, available on either a butterfly-clasp bracelet or a pin-buckle leather strap, keeps wearability and price at a comfortable level.
Of course, the star of the show is the brand-new dial. Inspired by high-rise buildings reflecting passing clouds, Glashütte Original captures this imagery with a mother-of-pearl dial finished with dark lacquer. Multiple layers, applied to the underside of the dial, allow it to shift between hues of silver and blue, with light refracting across every surface.
The entrancing dial is further enhanced by a six o’clock moonphase, also crafted from mother-of-pearl. A white moon appears alongside printed silver stars, with the entire arrangement surrounded by 20 brilliant-cut diamonds. A further 48 diamonds adorn the bezel, adding sparkle to the Serenade Luna Skyline Blue’s shimmer, while a rose-cut diamond sits neatly within the crown.
As with the rest of the Serenade Luna collection from Glashütte Original, the in-house Calibre 35-14 beats within the new Skyline Blue. With a luxury-standard 4Hz (28,800vph) beat rate and a 60-hour power reserve, the movement is as capable as it is captivating. A rose gold rotor, decorated with guilloché and Côtes de Genève, helps wind the movement on the go. As it spins, you catch glimpses of the craftsmanship that defines the rest of the calibre; truly a masterpiece to behold.
Final Thoughts
Last year, I had the absolute pleasure of witnessing Glashütte Original’s horological skills first-hand. While I had seen a small handful of their watches here in Australia, watching them being made in real time was something else entirely. Though most watch lovers are Geneva-bound, especially in the lead-up to Watches and Wonders, I highly encourage you to consider visiting the small but immensely fascinating town of Glashütte.
Glazing aside, the reason I love this watch so much is the new dial colour. As many watches dim during cloudy days, the Serenade Luna Skyline Blue shines brightly. The muted blue mother-of-pearl looks good in normal conditions, but even better on the gloomiest days. For the cosmopolitan woman looking to add a bold yet refined timepiece to her collection, this may well be the watch to consider.
