On the 50th Anniversary of the brand and its founders 100th birthday, Raymond Weil captures the spirit of travel with the new Freelancer World-Traveller.
It’s been a special year for Raymond Weil. With five decades of operation and a century having passed since the eponymous founder’s birth, 2026 marks the culmination of the brand’s incredible repositioning. Through ambitious design, excellent craftsmanship and unparalleled accessibility, the brand has transformed itself beyond the “mall watch” stigma into one of the pre-eminent leaders in the mid-market.
And though it’s been staging a massive comeback over the last few years, with the Millesime, Toccata Heritage and other standout models, one collection remains the backbone of its flagship offering. Amid the new and spectacular releases, the Freelancer has served as a cornerstone of the Raymond Weil catalogue since 2007.
Sporty and versatile, it’s the perfect blank canvas for mechanical complexity and artistic expression. This year, Raymond Weil celebrates two major anniversaries by bringing both together within the Freelancer’s familiar frame. Inspired by Mr Weil’s love of travel, this new interpretation of the collection promises to be a truly unique companion for the jet-setters among us.
Mr. Worldwide
Limited to just 260 pieces, the Raymond Weil Freelancer World-Traveller uses its classic frame for a singular purpose: globetrotting. Measuring 40mm in diameter and 10.25mm thick, the watch wears easily on the wrist.
We at Watch Advice should know; At the 50th anniversary celebratory luncheon in Sydney, we had the opportunity to wear one ahead of its release, courtesy of brand CEO Elie Bernheim, who had brought it along. The knurled bezel, combined with the elegant lines of the polished case and lugs, places the watch somewhere between a utility-driven tool watch and a luxury dress piece. It’s a true sports watch in that regard.
The new watch comes on a blue calfskin strap that follows the contours of the case so closely that it almost appears integrated. This seamless appearance further enhances wearability, while the folding deployant clasp ensures maximum comfort in any situation.
Though the watch is only water-resistant to 50 metres, the Freelancer World-Traveller will surely spend more time in the sky than in the water. Nevertheless, it remains well protected against the elements it’s likely to encounter in the hands of a frequent flyer.
Positive Projections
But while the case remains suitably robust for time travel, the dial of the Freelancer World-Traveller is the literal centrepiece of the entire operation. Set against a midnight-blue backdrop, a stamped, textured relief engraving of the entire world is rendered in a champagne tone. Inspired by the Mercator projection introduced by Flemish geographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, the design depicts every single country.
This is surprisingly rare in the worldtimer subgenre. Typically, such watch dials display only the Northern Hemisphere, as seen on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Geographic. Here, however, every nation is represented, including Australia and even New Zealand! Sure, one of the applied indexes cuts through our Great Southern Land, but as a resident of Queensland, I’m happy to see it completely obliterate New South Wales. I know I was born down there, but sorry, Sydney; Maybe next time!
Beyond the complexity of the relief engraving, the watch is complete with all the appropriate accoutrements. The applied faceted indexes, including the one cutting through Sydney, surround the dial alongside a white printed minute track. At the centre, four baton-style hands display the time, with the fourth, GMT hand marked by a red arrow. The outer periphery is divided into two distinct sections.
The first alternates between silver and blue in accordance with the day-night cycle of the 24-hour register. The second remains blue but is interspersed with the white text of 24 cities, each denoting a time zone. One contrasting marker stands out on the city ring: the marker below London, representing Greenwich Mean Time. But perhaps the most important detail of all is the distinctive typeface used for the branding. In fact, it’s not a typeface at all. In a touching tribute to Mr Weil, the text is actually the eponymous founder’s handwritten signature.
Around The World
Though the design and silhouette give the watch a powerful presence, the movement ensures it’s more than just a fashion statement. Inside is the calibre RW3230, with the brand once again turning to its partners at Sellita. Beating at a luxury standard of 4Hz (28,800VpH) and offering a 56-hour power reserve, the movement is based on the SW330-2, one of the most reliable third-party calibres on the market. Equipped with both a date display and a caller-style GMT complication, alongside Raymond Weil’s unique worldtimer function, the watch can display up to three time zones concurrently.
The first is straightforward: the hour, minute and seconds hands. The second is easily adjusted. Pulling out the crown allows the fourth, GMT hand to indicate another time zone on the adjoining 24-hour scale. Finally, rotating the bezel also rotates the city ring, allowing you to align your home time zone with the corresponding hour on the scale. From there, your local time and those of other cities can be cross-referenced at a glance, making this the perfect watch for anyone constantly switching between countries.
Initial Thoughts
With two major occasions coinciding in a single year, Raymond Weil’s celebrations have been nothing short of amazing. From the debut of the A.R.T. to the release of the special Millesime Fifty and Jubilee editions, the independent watch brand shows no signs of slowing down, with the Freelancer World-Traveller keeping the momentum going.
Yet this release feels markedly different from the other commemorative anniversary editions. Unlike the old-world aesthetic of the Millesime watches and the contemporary boldness of the A.R.T., the newest addition to the Freelancer collection serves a practical purpose within the lineup while also paying tribute to the man who started it all.
Now entering its third generation of family ownership under Elie Bernheim, Raymond Weil’s founding spirit is more prominent than ever in this new release. With a design inspired by the founder’s passions, reliable mechanics supplied by one of the industry’s biggest manufacturers and a relatively accessible price point, the Freelancer World-Traveller is a true-to-life representation of everything the brand stands for.
