Glashütte Original’s SeaQ “Northern Tide” editions bring North Atlantic inspiration, turquoise dégradé dials and German dive-watch engineering to two North American-exclusive releases.

Glashütte Original has introduced two new North American-exclusive editions based around its SeaQ family: the SeaQ “Northern Tide” and SeaQ Panorama Date “Northern Tide”. The timepieces take inspiration from the vast expanse of the North Atlantic, the connection between the Old and New Worlds. These two new editions bring together German engineering excellence with the SeaQ’s beautiful dive-watch platform.

These “Northern Tide” editions also introduce a brand-new colourway to the SeaQ collection. Each model features a matt turquoise lacquer dial that gradually deepens into black around the outer edges, creating a dégradé effect designed to evoke the swell and darker depths of the ocean. This is a beautiful aesthetic statement, and one that ties in nicely with the background of the timepiece as a precision instrument made for deep waters.

The historical connection of these “Northern Tide” editions is also an important part of the story. Glashütte Original notes that “timepieces from Glashütte were already crossing the Atlantic to the United States by the late 1800s“. This makes these limited-edition models more of a tribute to that early transatlantic success, rather than simply being another colour update to the SeaQ collection.

Glashütte Original SeaQ “Northern Tide” Limited Edition

The standard SeaQ “Northern Tide” is the more compact of the two new releases. It comes housed in a 39.5mm stainless steel case that captures the SeaQ collection’s dive-watch identity. With a thickness of 12.15mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.2mm, this, for me, is the more wearable option, as it will cater to a broader range of wrist sizes.

The proportions of this watch give it a strong advantage as an everyday luxury dive watch. With the diameter sitting just under 40mm, it still carries the wrist presence expected from a professional dive watch without becoming overly large or bulky on the wrist. The unidirectional rotating bezel with the black ceramic insert gives the watch a refined aesthetic presence, but what I personally feel is that it also adds to the dégradé effect of the dial beautifully, as the black on the outer edges continues onto the bezel.

And this dial is also where the SeaQ “Northern Tide” receives its strongest visual update. Glashütte Original has added a turquoise lacquer dial with the aforementioned black dégradé finish. This creates a beautiful, vibrant turquoise centre that fades into a darker, more oceanic outer edge. This black colour on the edge, as well as the bezel, is an important detail, as it prevents the turquoise centre from feeling too bright or purely decorative.

The integration of the date window at 3 o’clock is also well executed, as it gives the dial a more balanced aesthetic. The placement of a date window can always be a tricky design choice, because you either have to remove elements of the dial for it to not feel out of place, or risk making the dial feel cluttered. Here, however, Glashütte Original has done well to keep the date discreet and neatly integrated, allowing it to feel like a natural part of the dial rather than an added complication.

The movement sitting inside the SeaQ “Northern Tide” is Glashütte Original’s in-house Calibre 39-11 automatic movement. Powering the time indications along with the date display, the Calibre 39-11 gives the watch a straightforward and practical mechanical foundation. The movement operates at 4Hz, or 28,800vph, delivering stable everyday timekeeping, which is ideal if you plan on wearing the watch daily. And with a 40-hour power reserve, it offers enough running time for regular use, even if it is not as technically impressive as the 100-hour Calibre 36-13 found inside the larger SeaQ Panorama Date.

What is certainly impressive about the Calibre 39-11 automatic movement, however, is its exceptional finishing. With Glashütte Original belonging directly to the historic tradition and geographic heart of Saxon watchmaking, we can expect nothing short of the highest standard of decorative refinement.

Through the sapphire crystal caseback, you can admire hallmarks of Glashütte watchmaking, including the three-quarter plate, blued screws and Glashütte stripe finish, which gives this professional dive watch highly detailed finishing that you will not find in many other watches in the same category.

Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date “Northern Tide” Limited Edition

The SeaQ Panorama Date “Northern Tide” is the larger and more assertive of the two dive models. The case measures 43.2mm in diameter, 15.65mm thick and 51.5mm lug-to-lug, providing a much stronger wrist presence than the standard SeaQ “Northern Tide” edition. However, that also comes at the cost of accommodating a wider range of wrist sizes.

However, this is exactly why Glashütte Original has released two variants of the “Northern Tide” series, as it gives collectors the option between a more compact and wearable SeaQ, or a larger, more technically expressive SeaQ Panorama Date. The increased size of the Panorama Date also gives the watch a more serious professional dive-watch character. This is not the everyday option compared to the standard SeaQ “Northern Tide”, but rather it is designed to feel substantial, powerful and technically capable as a dive watch.

And with this larger and more technically capable design comes greater water resistance, with the SeaQ Panorama Date offering a 300-metre depth rating. The watch has been tested to DIN 8306 and ISO 6425 standards for diver’s watches, ensuring that it can reach these depths reliably.

Like the SeaQ “Northern Tide” Limited Edition, this Panorama Date version comes with either a stainless steel bracelet or an additional black synthetic strap, offering versatility as it can take on a more luxurious aesthetic with the bracelet, or a sportier and more functional side with the synthetic strap.

The SeaQ Panorama Date uses the same matt turquoise lacquer dial with black dégradé finishing as the standard SeaQ. On the larger 43.2mm case, the dial has more visual space to showcase this beautiful turquoise lacquer and dégradé finishing, enhancing the visual transition and giving the watch a larger personality.

The date window is one of the key differences between the two models. Unlike the naturally balanced design of the SeaQ “Northern Tide”, the Panorama Date replaces the 4 o’clock index with a larger date window and a black date wheel. This, for me, does throw the dial’s balance out slightly, but it also gives the watch a stronger Glashütte Original identity, as the Panorama Date is one of the Maison’s signature complications.

The movement inside the SeaQ Panorama Date “Northern Tide” is Glashütte Original’s in-house Calibre 36-13 automatic calibre. Even though the Panorama Date is the larger of the two models, it packs a heavier-hitting technical foundation, as this is the more impressive movement of the two calibres used in this “Northern Tide” series. While it runs at the same 4Hz frequency as the Calibre 39-11, it starts to pull away dramatically with its increased power reserve of 100 hours.

The finishing, however, is still at the same exceptional standard we have come to expect from German-Saxon watchmaking. Visible through the caseback, we are treated to traditional Saxon watchmaking details, including the three-quarter plate, blued screws and Glashütte stripe finish.

Initial Thoughts

Splitting the release across two SeaQ “Northern Tide” editions makes a lot of sense, especially considering that even though both models share the same design concept, they are quite far apart in execution. The standard SeaQ “Northern Tide” edition is aimed at those who want a reliable all-rounder dive watch.

One that can be worn every day, whether to the office or out on weekend chores, this is a watch that fits this category perfectly. And with a beautiful dial that is bound to catch attention, exceptional Saxon finishing and beautifully proportioned sizing, it feels like the easier of the two models to recommend from a daily-wear perspective.

The Panorama Date edition, on the other hand, is aimed at those who want something larger, more technical and more recognisably Glashütte Original. With a larger case profile that also comes with a deeper water-resistance rating, the signature Panorama Date display and the 100-hour power reserve movement, this is certainly the stronger package of the two models.

These SeaQ “Northern Tide” editions work because they give collectors two very different expressions of the same ocean-inspired concept: one compact and highly wearable, the other larger, more technical and more distinctly Glashütte Original.
