Seiko’s latest Prospex Asia-Pacific Limited Editions bring bright dial colours, textured surfaces and proper 200m dive-watch capability.
Seiko has introduced two new Prospex models that bring a brighter, more vibrant, and resort-inspired personality to the brand’s accessible 200m diver platform. The Asia-Pacific Limited Edition models, HBB003K and HBB004K, are both inspired by the coastal scenery of Asian resorts.
The design concept behind these two editions centres around the transition from ‘golden sunset’ to ‘tranquil night’, using bright coloured dials of orange and yellow, along with black bezels to capture this imagery of shifting from daylight warmth to the dark evening.
Seiko makes fantastic coloured dials throughout its various collections, which helps make the brand appealing to a broader range of collectors and enthusiasts. I can personally attest to this after owning various Seiko 5 Sports and Prospex models in different colours.
One of the standout models in my own collection is the yellow dial Seiko 5, as it is vibrant, bold and catches the eye easily. These new Prospex Asia-Pacific Limited Edition models do exactly that, bringing a bright and playful personality to Seiko’s accessible dive-watch platform.
Both models are limited to 2,500 pieces each, and are exclusive to the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan). This puts the watch nicely into the collector bracket, while also being accessible, with it being priced at AUD $995.
Bold Dive-Watch Design With Summery Dial Colour
These two new Prospex editions are housed in a stainless steel case, measuring 41.7mm in diameter and 12.3mm thick. The lug-to-lug distance is 49.5mm, which sits in a range where it’ll fit the majority of wrist sizes comfortably. Being 12.3mm thick, itll also add some bulk to the watch, which I think is perfectly fine as this is meant to be a watch worn underwater. You want to feel the watch on your wrist, and not only that, it aids the overall durability and robustness of the design, giving these Prospex editions the kind of presence you expect from a proper dive watch.
The case architecture is shared with Seiko’s more recent Prospex HBB001 platform, which the brand describes as “having a bold shape and sharply refined design”. The lugs have a strong faceted design, which adds to the angular and sharp aesthetic of the watch.
I also love the execution of the crown. It might be a minute detail, but one that I feel elevates the overall design with its knurled finishing. Not only does it add a more tool-like and functional character to the case, but it’s also practical as it provides better grip. This is exactly what you want from a dive watch with a proper screw-down crown.
The dial mimics this sharp angular design that is showcased throughout the case. The most notable elements in this regard is the hour and minute hands, along with the hour indices, which all feature a bold, faceted profile. This gives the dial a stronger sense of structure, while also connecting it to the more modern and aggressive design of the Prospex collection.
And then we have the beautiful, radiant dial colours. Available in either vibrant orange or yellow, the dials also come with a sand-textured surface. The yellow HBB003K leans into the brightness of sunlit beaches, while the orange HBB004K feels warmer and more sunset-driven.
I can certainly see the appeal of both dial colours, but for me, it has to be the yellow. There is just something about this colour on a watch dial that makes the watch feel instantly more energetic, vibrant and, above all, playful. While that may not have been the direct intention, it certainly captures the brightness of “sunlit beaches”, or at the very least, reminds you of sunnier days!
Seiko’s Trusted 4R35 Automatic Calibre
Inside these new editions sits Seiko’s Calibre 4R35 automatic movement. This is one of the brand’s most familiar and widely used entry-level mechanical calibres. In fact, when Seiko Australia came down to Brisbane last year for the launch of the stunning Prospex Sea “Kame” Australasian Edition, Watch Adice and Seiko teamed up to host a watchmaking workshop in which we assembled a 4R35 calibre movement!
That experience reinforced what this movement is really about: simplicity, reliability and everyday practicality, which suits these accessible Prospex divers perfectly. Operating at 3Hz (21,600 Vph) with a power reserve of 41 hours, the 4R35 calibre delivers performance that is perfectly in line with an accessible everyday automatic diver.
Initial Thoughts
These two new Asia-Pacific Limited Edition Prospex models feel like a pure classic Seiko design. The models take a familiar design with the modern Prospex diver formula, and imbue it with strong colours and story to match, turning it into fun collectible pieces. And what’s best of all is that they are accessible without pushing the price too far.
The orange HBB004K is arguably the more dramatic of the two, especially as it’s trying to capture that golden sunset inspiration. Whereas my personal favourite, the yellow HBB003K, feels like the brighter, sunnier, and more playful edition, perfectly capturing the sunlit beaches aesthetic.
Regardless of which model you may prefer, these new Asia-Pacific Limited Edition Prospex models bring a bright, summery, and easy-to-enjoy feeling back into the Prospex collection. They show how much vibrant dial colours can add to the personality of a watch, especially when paired with a regional story.
