Andersen Genève’s Communication 45 Platinum blends worldtime heritage, BlueGold craftsmanship and vintage movement architecture in one beautifully refined limited edition.

Andersen Genève has long been associated with the beauty of worldtime watchmaking, and to celebrate the brand’s 45th anniversary in 2025, it introduced the Communication 45 collection. Not only did it celebrate this anniversary, but it also marked the legacy of Andersen Genève’s first serially produced wristwatch, the Communication from 1990.

Founded in 1980 by independent watchmaker Svend Andersen after he left Patek Philippe, Andersen Genève has been a pioneering force in independent watchmaking and horological art. Svend Andersen’s history in creating worldtime complications goes back decades, to his early days restoring important watches in Switzerland, where he was exposed to Louis Cottier-style worldtime mechanisms.

After working in Patek Philippe’s Grand Complications workshop and gaining extensive knowledge and experience, Svend Andersen developed his own ultra-thin worldtime complication in the late 1980s, which eventually powered the Communication 24 in 1990. Then, in 2025, Andersen Genève introduced the Communication 45 in yellow gold, a timepiece that blends historical worldtime watchmaking, old-school handcraft, and highly decorative dial work.

Andersen Genève Unveils The Stunning Communication 45 Platinum

Now, for the latest evolution of the Communication 45 collection, Andersen Genève is introducing a platinum-cased edition with a 21ct BlueGold dial, featuring wave-form tapisserie guilloché and different maps of the world. This is a highly limited edition, with only 45 pieces being made. Out of those 45 pieces, the collection is split into three 15-piece series, each showcasing Europe, Asia or the Americas. By separating this limited edition into different regions, Andersen Genève gives collectors and enthusiasts a more personal way of collecting.

Classic Worldtimer Elegance With A BlueGold Dial

This latest platinum edition of the Communication 45 retains the signature design of the 2025 edition, with the watch housed in a 38mm case measuring just 8.95mm thick. The slimness of this design is certainly an important aspect, as worldtimers are known to be mechanically complex, which can often result in bulkier watches. However, Andersen Genève has done well to keep the proportions slim, making it not only elegant in design, but also wearable and accommodating for a range of wrist sizes.

The Communication 45 takes its design inspiration from the original 1990 Communication 24. While not all design aspects have been carried across, the most distinctive element is the teardrop-style lugs. Andersen Genève has taken this concept and given it a modern update, which the brand describes as “making the lugs fuller and more sculptural, while blending that teardrop inspiration with a subtle cornes-de-vache character. This gives the watch a strong vintage personality without making it feel like a direct copy of the original”.

The case design takes on that classic Cottier-style worldtimer architecture, featuring a beautifully smooth, rounded case with polished surfaces throughout the entirety of the timepiece. This gives the watch an elegant and luxurious aesthetic, which, when combined with the platinum material, makes the Communication 45 feel refined, precious and very much in line with traditional worldtimer design.

The dial of the Communication 45 is where the timepiece really comes to life. It uses Andersen Genève’s signature 21ct BlueGold material, which the brand states is “created in its Geneva workshop by kiln-heating gold to achieve a lustrous shade of deep blue for the platinum edition”. The dial surface is then decorated with the brand’s historic wave-form tapisserie guilloché pattern.

The dial map at the centre is a sensational design, featuring landmasses that have been hollowed out and inlaid with pure gold, executed through a multi-stage process developed specifically for the Communication 45 collection. This gives the dial a strong sense of depth and craftsmanship, while also creating a beautiful artistic distinction between the land, sea and surrounding worldtime display.

What completes this display is, of course, the 24-hour city ring shown on the outer part of the dial. Andersen Genève uses a bespoke font for the city names and a two-tone day/night layout, allowing dial readability to remain crisp and clear. The brand also states that the 24-hour ring uses different numeral treatments for day and night, which adds another layer of intricate detail to this beautifully executed timepiece.

A Vintage Calibre Reworked With Andersen Genève Craftsmanship

The movement that sits inside this Communication 45 Platinum is also something quite special, and not what we are accustomed to seeing in modern-day watchmaking. Andersen Genève has used a restored vintage A. Schild automatic base movement, which the brand has paired with its own in-house worldtime module. The use of the A. Schild calibre brings a historic movement foundation to the piece, while including a complication that is directly linked to Svend Andersen’s worldtime legacy.

This automatic calibre performs at 3Hz (21,600 VpH), while delivering a power reserve output of 40 hours. While these aren’t impressive figures by modern watchmaking standards, we need to consider that this is a repurposed vintage calibre running a full worldtime display through Andersen Genève’s ultra-thin 0.9mm in-house module, while still keeping the watch to just 8.95mm thick overall.

The impressive part for me, however, is the movement’s execution. The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback, and this is important because Andersen Genève has not left the vintage base movement untouched. The brand has reworked the bridges with frosted surfaces, polished bevels, and mirror-polished screws. But the best part of the movement is the BlueGold rotor, which echoes the colour and tapisserie guilloché pattern of the dial, showing that Andersen Genève has taken a very thoughtful approach to the aesthetic design of this timepiece.

Initial Thoughts

Andersen Genève’s latest Communication 45 feels like a natural evolution for the line, following on from last year’s yellow gold anniversary edition. While that model featured a warmer and more golden personality, this new platinum edition is the cooler, more refined, and arguably more elegant model.

What I like most, however, is that Andersen Genève has not tinkered too much with the heart of the watch. The 38mm case with refined teardrop-style lugs, the BlueGold dial, the worldtime module and the vintage movement architecture all remain central to the identity of the Communication 45, and that identity has been kept beautifully intact.

While all these details present the timepiece in both a technical and aesthetic manner, it is the beautifully executed dial map and winding rotor that stand out for me. The artistic craftsmanship behind these two elements showcases the decorative expertise and old-world approach to independent watchmaking that Andersen Genève brings, making these pieces feel truly special.
