Chanel gives the J12 Superleggera a darker, sportier edge with this sleek new Caliber 12.1 model in matte black ceramic and steel.

For Chanel enthusiasts and anyone who loves an all-black aesthetic, the new J12 Superleggera will be right up your alley. Presented in a matte black aesthetic, this new J12 Superleggera takes a more sleek and sporty approach, combining materials like highly resistant ceramic and steel for a sharper, performance-driven model that still stays true to the model’s core identity.

Chanel first presented the J12 Superleggera in 2005, which makes these modern renditions a revival, more so than a completely new concept. For context, the J12 was initially designed as the brand’s first unisex sports watch, featuring sleek lines that were inspired by racing yachts. This sporty foundation of the J12 line is what made it easy to evolve into a more performance-driven collection like the Superleggera. The name “Superleggera” itself is associated with lightweight, high-performance design in the automotive world, so it immediately gives this “evolved” J12 a more competition-inspired character.

A Sharper Side Of The J12

This new rendition of the J12 Superleggera retains the signature proportions of the collection, with a case size of 42mm and a thickness of approximately 14.5mm. It is now presented in a matte black, highly resistant “Chanel ceramic” material. Parts of the case also feature steel components, which have a black DLC coating to match the overall darker aesthetic. The bezel and crown, however, have the steel in its natural state, which helps to create a seamless contrast between the different materials while reinforcing the watch’s more performance-driven identity.

The use of “Chanel ceramic” gives the timepiece its strength, but at the same time is also what makes it so light on the wrist. The brand states that this material is “7 times stronger than steel, CHANEL ceramic weathers all storms”. Chanel has given the material a soft treatment by polishing it with diamond powder, which makes the timepiece feel “smooth as silk” when touching the skin.

Dark Details, Sporting Edge

The dial of this new J12 Superleggera continues the case’s darker and “performance-driven” aesthetic with a black lacquer dial that features a double-textured treatment. With a circular satin finish in the centre and azured borders, it gives the dial a lot more depth than a simple flat black finish would. Even though from a distance it looks like a simple black finish, upon closer inspection, the subtle differences in texture mean that the dial has plenty of visual details, especially when light hits it.

The rhodium-plated hour markers and hands stand out nicely against the deep black dial, offering a rich contrast between the two elements that also helps to make dial readability crisp and clear. The J12 Superleggera has always featured some form of red details on the dial, usually in the form of the “Superleggera” inscription itself. For this latest edition, however, Chanel has really leaned into giving the dial more colour. Red details such as the name, tip of the minute hand, date indicator, and the red accent scale on the inner dial, give the timepiece a more instrument/performance-driven feel, perfectly in line with what the model stands for!

Performance Beneath The Ceramic

Powering this latest J12 Superleggera is Chanel’s Calibre 12.1 self-winding automatic movement. The movement was first introduced in 2019 for the sportier models in the brand’s lineup. Produced by Kenissi, the Swiss manufacturer in which CHANEL is a co-owner, the movement is COSC chronometer-certified, which means this Superleggera is not just about dark aesthetics and sleek design but also about delivering everyday precision.

With a 70-hour power reserve, it certainly delivers on being a practical movement for everyday wear. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the Caliber 12.1 features an oscillating mass with black coating, which is a nice touch because it keeps the darker, sportier character consistent from front to back.

Initial Thoughts

Giving constant aesthetic updates to a signature collection can be difficult, especially when the original design is already an icon for the brand. However, Chanel has managed to give this new J12 Superleggera a fresh identity through meaningful changes, taking everything that made the original design such a standout for the brand and giving it a darker, sportier, and more performance-driven aesthetic.

From the matte black ceramic case, black lacquer dial, red accents, and technical bezel details all work together to give the watch a much more assertive character, yet it still feels like a J12. What I like most is that this is not just CHANEL making the watch look more aggressive for the sake of it, but rather leaning into the Superleggera name properly, with a design that feels sleek, purposeful, and backed by genuine mechanical substance through the COSC-certified Caliber 12.1.
