The movie Back to the Future (1985) inspired him to play guitar. When he was seventeen, he was suddenly stricken with a cardiac arrhythmia that sent him to the hospital for a weekend. The trauma of the incident sparked his songwriting, and he penned his first lyrics the night he got home.

He also carries quite an influence in the watch industry. In his interview with Hodinkee, he talks about his watch collection, and during this, he mentions the yellow-gold Rolex Daytona with a green anniversary dial (reference 116508). During his discussion about the watch, he briefly mentions that it “has great value”. This was enough to inspire the horology world to nickname the reference 116508 as “John Mayer’s Daytona“.
