Maurice Lacroix PONTOS Chronograph 43mm Revealed

by Sameera Gamage

Maurice Lacroix is bringing their more popular model back into the limelight with two new updated variations. The PONTOS Chronograph 43mm is now offered in either a black or gunmetal sunray brushed dial with details that make each piece stand out in its own right.

About the same time last year, Maurice Lacroix released two variants of the PONTOS chronograph, a stunning blue dial, and a panda dial variant, both with a tachymeter scale. This year’s releases keep the same internal layout on the dial, however, the differences in design can easily be seen.

The new PONTOS chronograph models come with a 43mm stainless steel case. For this latest release, the tachymeter scale from last year’s design has been removed to allow for a smooth finish bezel that matches the case. With a more refined case, comes a classical touch for the dial design. Firstly, the dials are available in either black or gunmetal grey. While both dials have the sunray effect, it’s more prominent on the gunmetal grey, with the sub-counter dials being kept black like on the black dial version. While it may be subtle, having this colour difference on the gunmetal grey dial is a nice touch as it adds more character to the watch.

Compared to the previous version which had baton-style hands for the hour indices, the PONTOS chronograph now features Arabic hour markers, which adds the classic touch to this timepiece while also making the dial seem less cluttered. Due to the sizes of the sub-counters however, the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock hour indices have been cut off, which is a necessity as making the subdials smaller would hinder readability. The gunmetal grey dial comes with the hour indices, hands, and Maurice Lacroix logo done in rose gold, which suits the colour background of the watch nicely.

Another added feature on the dial is the date window at the 6 o’clock position. It seems hidden within the sub-dial, which aids in keeping this chronograph dial as less cluttered as possible. The finishing touch to the readability of the dial is that the hour, minute, and central chronograph hand have been filled with SuperlumiNova.

Both variants of the new PONTOS chronograph 43mm come with an open case back, which gives sight into the automatic ML 112 calibre movement that’s at the heart of this watch. The ML 112 is an automatic movement based on ETA/Valjoux 7750. It operates at a frequency of 28,800 VpH (4hz) and gives out a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. With the case back being open, it allows the wearer to see the movements finishing such as Côtes de Genève and circular graining, with the rotor being embellished with vertical Côtes de Genève and sun brushing.

The Maurice Lacroix PONTOS Chronograph 43mm is offered in either a 3-row stainless steel bracelet or a black leather strap. The brand has given the leather strap its iconic M-logo, which stands out well on the gunmetal grey dial variant as the logo is done in rose-gold. Both variants of this PONTOS Chronograph come equipped with the brand’s Easy Strap Exchange system, which allows the user to quickly interchange between straps.

Continuously striving to improve their timepieces, Maurice Lacroix has created two new aesthetically pleasing timepieces with classic yet modern design codes. Both variants will be ready for purchase March 2023.
