Jacob&Co introduces their new Epic X

by Chamath Gamage

Jacob & Co unveiled their latest Epic X model edition during the 2022 Geneva Watch Days. This newest rendition of the timepiece is sleeker and streamlined from the previous models in the Epic X collection. The Epic X’s first edition, released in 2015, featured a skeleton and sporty look. This second-generation model now has altered shapes and surfaces to make it modern looking.

One of the few timepieces in Jacob & Co’s collection to be made from steel, the new Epic X now also features a bold 44mm case, x-shaped lugs, and an all-new 5-link steel bracelet.

This new 5-link bracelet is made up of the case’s unique angles and curves. Each of the 5-link rows is polished and chamfered to be a three-dimensional sculpture, with a profile of half-octagon and curved base.

This new Epic X was built so that it would be versatile for a variety of different designs. As a way of showing this versatility, Jacob & Co is releasing this new Epic X in three versions; a steel case with blue aluminium in a steel bracelet or black rubber strap, a rose gold case with green alumnium parts on either a rose gold bracelet or black rubber strap, and lastly a black DLC case with black details on a rubber strap.

All three variants of this Epic X comes strapped with the calibre JCAM45 movement, which has been an integral part of the identity making up the Epic X model. The movement allows for the vertical open-worked dial which ultimately shows the essence of this movement. The visual poetry of this vertical open-worked section of the dial lies with the wide barrel at 12 o’clock and the balance wheel at 6 o’clock. A range of colours exists within this open-worked section, which is all the more visible on the all-black DLC model.

Watchadvice’s thoughts:

Ever since its initial release back in 2015, Jacob & Co’s Epic X has had quite a few renditions. Varying from chronograph models to an all-sapphire dial, to racing editions, the Epic X is becoming quite the iconic piece for the brand.

Now with the release of the second generation model of the Epic X, Jacob & Co is giving the watch new aesthetic codes while retaining the same mechanical prowess as the first gen. The easiest identifiable update in the second-gen is the shape of the case and bezel. The bezel is now smooth and polished instead of being stepped and has a much steeper angle as well. The lugs have also been redesigned to now sit slightly above the crystal, with the ends of the lugs being more angular to better fit the strap.

The three colour choices on offer create a versatile collection that caters to a range of personal tastes. If precious metal is what you are after, then the rose gold edition is a perfect choice. If you want a more sleek look that truly showcases the open-worked dial, look no further than the all-black edition. The stainless steel blue and white option is the standard, offering a more playful look with the luxury appeal of the new stainless steel 5-link bracelet.
