Seiko have no plans to stop innovating their iconic Astron collection, with two new limited edition runs inspired by the beauty of crystal caves.

When it comes to some of the most iconic watches in history, few can claim to be more divisive than the Seiko Astron. Debuting on Christmas Day in 1969, the world’s first quartz watch kicked off one of the biggest paradigm shifts in the industry: the Quartz Crisis. But while the Swiss watch industry was brought to the brink of collapse, and German watchmaking remained hidden away behind the Iron Curtain, Japan’s horological scene thrived.

Since its introduction, the Astron has been a staple of Seiko’s extensive catalogue. Throughout its tenure, the Astron has seen countless renditions, spanning case materials, technological advancements, complications, and disruptive designs. This year, Seiko has elected to continue adding to the Astron’s legacy with two new limited editions, each sporting a striking aesthetic inspired by crystals concealed within dark rock.

I Am Titanium

The Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph 2026 Limited Editions, Refs. HAB009J and HAB010J, offer distinctly different interpretations of this crystalline-inspired concept. Both references measure 43.4mm in diameter, 50mm from lug to lug and 12.4mm in thickness, with titanium cases finished in Seiko’s own black Super Hard Coating.

Unlike Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC), which typically gives metals a matte or satin black finish, Seiko’s Super Hard Coating sits somewhere between standard PVD and DLC in terms of finish and performance. Preserving the metallic finish beneath, it still manages to protect the watch with a hardness rating approximately two to three times greater than standard steel.

Combined with the use of ultra-light, ultra-resistant titanium, not to mention the absence of a mechanical movement, the substantial Astron frame sits incredibly lightly on the wrist. Alongside the model’s 100m water resistance, these watches are perfectly equipped to handle just about anything thrown their way.

The wearing experience is further enhanced by Seiko’s material- and colour-matched titanium bracelets. With mirror-polished centre links and black-coated outer links, these Astrons feel comparatively dressy against their futuristic form and function. The bracelets are also packed with functional conveniences, including Seiko’s Easy Adjust mechanism and tool-less interchangeability. The latter is particularly important, as the complementary black leather strap allows the wearer to enhance the Astron’s elegance even further.

Crystal Visions

But for as demure as the black finish makes the case silhouette, supplementary accents of pink and yellow gold give the new Seiko Astrons a degree of extravagance. These accents extend from the case sides to the crown, pushers and bezel. On the dial, the lumed hands and indices share the same finishes.

Both accents are paired with their respective dial colours, complementing and contrasting their tones in different ways. The first watch, Ref. HAB009J, uses a burgundy-red dial with pink-gold accents, while Ref. HAB010J accentuates its yellow-gold details with a greenish-blue colourway. Central to both designs, however, is the crystalline inspiration.

The brilliant finishes are topped with a repeating triangular pattern, intended to evoke the geometry of geological formations, specifically gemstones emerging from black rock. It adds another layer of texture and intrigue to a watch that already has plenty of it. Even with all its functions displayed in printed white text, the dial somehow manages to steal the show each time you look at it, reinforcing both its underground inspiration and the Astron’s futuristic aesthetic.

Praise The Sun

Turning the watch around, as you might expect with quartz pieces, yields few surprises. A solid caseback with serial engravings conceals the movement within, which is none other than the Calibre 5X63. A solar-powered quartz movement, the Astron’s functionality revolves around GPS satellite signals, allowing it to synchronise and adjust to different time zones with near-perfect accuracy. Even without synchronisation, it still boasts an accuracy rating of approximately ±15 seconds per month, or about half a second per day.

Beyond its accuracy, Seiko’s Calibre 5X63 also includes a twin-time display, a 38-time-zone world timer, interchangeable home and local time displays, a chronograph, a perpetual calendar, automatic daylight saving adjustment and a power reserve indicator. It’s a dizzying array of complications that would cost several fortunes in a mechanical watch, yet the Seiko Astron manages to achieve it all with barely half a second’s worth of deviation to spare.

Oh, and did I mention that the power reserve lasts six months, and can be charged with literally any light source? It can even extend to two years when switched to power-saving mode. With all its features combined, the Astron’s Cal. 5X63 is perhaps the greatest exercise in wrist-mounted, accurate, complex timekeeping that money can buy.

Initial Thoughts

For all the reservations some enthusiasts might have about quartz watchmaking, there should always be an air of reverence and respect when the Seiko Astron is mentioned. The Thanos of the Swiss watch industry, its arrival kick-started a revolution that brought the watchmaking world of the time to its knees. But while its legacy is firmly established, Seiko is clearly not done telling the Astron’s story.

Releases like these new crystalline-inspired pieces prove that time and again, combining one of the most iconic names in the industry with some of the most groundbreaking technological and aesthetic enhancements horology has to offer. A demonstration of epic functionality and disruptive form, the new HAB009J and HAB010J prove that there’s still plenty of fun to be had with the modern Astron collection.
