Frederique Constant gives its Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture a rich burgundy dial, with the new edition limited to 100 pieces!
Frederique Constant has been doing an exceptional job of bringing high watchmaking timepieces within reach of more enthusiasts and collectors. The brand’s Classic Perpetual Calendar is a fine example of this. And it’s not as though the brand has skimped on quality or watchmaking craftsmanship to make it affordable. These are elegant, luxurious, and brilliantly technical designs, with a dose of aesthetic flair to make them visually appealing timepieces.
Frederique Constant first introduced its manufacture perpetual calendar back in 2016. Back then, the brand stood out by offering a highly complicated model, which is traditionally expensive, at a significantly lower price compared to its competitors. The Perpetual Calendar was certainly an important release for this Swiss watchmaker, showing what it could achieve with its in-house manufacturing.
There are currently several models available in Frederique Constant’s Classic Perpetual Calendar catalogue, with different dial colours and case materials. More recently, however, the brand introduced what is arguably one of the most stunning perpetual calendar models on the market currently. The Classic Perpetual Calendar with its turquoise dial is gorgeous to look at, while the technicality of the perpetual calendar complication remains intact and easy to read.
Now, the brand is introducing another interpretation of the Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture, this time with a much deeper and more refined sunray-brushed burgundy dial. Limited to 100 pieces, this rich colour is matched beautifully with the stainless steel case to offer an entirely different personality to its predecessors.
A Classic Perpetual Calendar Dressed in Burgundy
This latest edition retains the 2025 update to the Classic Perpetual Calendar line, featuring a stainless steel case that measures 40mm in diameter with a thickness of approximately 12.25mm. This is a well-proportioned watch for something that has such a complex mechanism inside, while still retaining an elegant dress watch aesthetic. What enhances the design further is the rounded case architecture, featuring a sloped bezel with a mirror-like polished finish.
The case features a sandwich-style construction, which you can see from its side profile. While the top and bottom components feature a refined bezel and caseback, the case middle features softened lugs that help define the watch’s dress watch characteristics. The pusher on the side of the case at the 4 o’clock position is used to adjust the calendar indications as required.
While the case remains unchanged, the burgundy dial is certainly the defining visual highlight of this latest Classic Perpetual Calendar. Unlike the previous turquoise stone dial, which relies on its natural variations for visual effect, this burgundy dial features a sunray-brushed surface. This means that under different lighting angles, the burgundy will shift from a lighter, vibrant hue to a darker tone. Where this watch will really come to life, however, is in sunlight, where the lighter tones can stand out even further.
This rich burgundy tone adds a beautiful colour variation to the existing Classic Perpetual Calendar collection, just like the turquoise edition. The dial comes equipped with applied, faceted nickel-plated hour markers and polished hands, which not only complement the stainless steel case but also contrast beautifully against the burgundy background.
The technicality of the perpetual calendar is shown in a balanced, quadrant-like layout. While the information for a complication of this nature can sometimes appear busy, Frederique Constant has done well to keep the dial as refined and simple as possible, allowing the burgundy, which is the highlight, to take the limelight.
The perpetual calendar indications are displayed through three circular-decorated subdials. The 3 o’clock subdial showcases the date, while the opposite subdial at 9 o’clock features the day of the week indication. The 12 o’clock subdial displays the month on the outer portion, while the inner display shows the leap-year indication. Lastly, we have the moon-phase indicator at 6 o’clock. While this is not technically a subdial, its half-circular cutout presents a visual that helps balance the subdials in a quadrant-like format.
A Manufacture Perpetual Calendar With Three Days of Power
This latest edition of the Classic Perpetual Calendar features Frederique Constant’s automatic calibre FC-776, which combines a base movement with a perpetual calendar module. The movement operates at a frequency of 4Hz (28,800VpH), while offering an impressive 72-hour power reserve, a significant increase over the 38 hours of the brand’s previous-generation perpetual calendar calibre. The improvement in the calibre FC-776’s power reserve is down to a redesigned barrel and mainspring alloy.
The timepiece features a sapphire caseback, which gives a view of the calibre FC-776. While much of the movement is covered, Frederique Constant has still embellished it with colour and different finishing techniques, such as perlage on the bridges and fan-shaped Côtes de Genève on the winding bridge. The skeletonised winding rotor is gold-plated, with a vertical satin-brushed finish.
Initial Thoughts
The addition of the burgundy dial to the Classic Perpetual Calendar range gives the collection a stunning colour that plays with light beautifully. Burgundy is one of the colours that works well on almost any watch dial. In this case, however, it helps to balance the timepiece’s technical prowess with visual appeal. It certainly adds character to the watch without taking attention away from its balanced dial and simple, refined appearance.
Beyond this new colour, though, the appeal of the watch remains the same. With the combination of an in-house perpetual calendar at a comparatively approachable price and a movement that offers 72 hours of autonomy, it’s not only a watch that is beautiful to wear, but also practical too. Limited to 100 pieces, it’s another example of Frederique Constant offering serious watchmaking at a more affordable price point.
