The new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech turns patience into purpose, with a 3-hour timing system built for those who spend serious time beneath the surface.
The Fifty Fathoms collection from Blancpain is one that has always sat at the serious end of the dive watch world. Since it was first introduced in 1953, the Fifty Fathoms has represented Blancpain’s deep connection to underwater exploration, not just as another luxury dive sports watch, but as a genuine instrument created for those who venture deep into ocean waters.
Blancpain is now expanding the collection with a new Fifty Fathoms Tech model, continuing the legacy of one of the brand’s most specialised modern dive watches while making it even more practical, not only for technical diving, but also as an everyday timepiece.
The headline feature of this new timepiece is the world-first 3-hour bezel and dedicated 3-hour hand. This concept was first introduced in 2023 with the Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa, and was created specifically for extended technical dives, especially those involving closed-circuit rebreathers. Rather than measuring elapsed underwater time across the traditional 60-minute scale, the system allows divers to track a full three-hour duration with greater clarity and precision.
Large, Light And Built For Technical Diving
The new Fifty Fathoms Tech comes housed in a 47mm case made from Grade 23 titanium. While titanium is already valued in watchmaking and used quite often, Grade 23 is not the standard go-to choice across the industry. Also known as Ti-6Al-4V ELI, Grade 23 titanium is a higher-purity version of the more commonly used Grade 5 titanium, with ELI standing for Extra Low Interstitial. This gives the material excellent toughness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance, all qualities that make it well suited to a serious dive watch.

In saying that, the elephant in the room needs to be addressed here, and that is the fact that this is quite a large watch. Measuring 14.81mm thick, it is not exactly suited for smaller wrists (like mine!), and this is where the technical purpose of the watch becomes important context. This is not meant to be a slim, everyday desk-diver or a vintage-inspired Fifty Fathoms. It is a serious professional dive instrument, and the size is largely due to what Blancpain has built into the watch: a three-hour timing system, 300m of water resistance, a helium escape valve, and an overall focus on underwater legibility and functionality.
The three-hour timing system is really the defining feature of this watch. Traditional dive bezels measure elapsed time over 60 minutes, but Blancpain developed this extended scale for modern technical diving, where closed-circuit rebreather dives can last two, three, or even more hours underwater. The Fifty Fathoms Tech uses a dedicated 3-hour hand on the dial, which is the bright orange hand, in conjunction with the unidirectional 3-hour bezel, allowing divers to track longer underwater sessions with ease.
Crystal-Clear Clarity Beneath The Surface
As mentioned, the dial of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech is all about simplicity and crystal-clear clarity. For this model, Blancpain has used an absolute black dial that absorbs up to 97% of ambient light, helping to create strong contrast against the hands and markers. On a dive watch built for serious underwater use, this is a critical detail, as the information on the dial needs to be read quickly and clearly, especially in changing lighting conditions.

Speaking of lighting conditions, the dial features an ample amount of Super-LumiNova. Not only that, but the Maison has cleverly separated the dive-time indications from the regular time display through the use of different Super-LumiNova emissions. For example, the diving indications use blue-emission Super-LumiNova, while the regular time display uses the traditional green-emission Super-LumiNova. This might be a small detail on paper, but when diving, it means the wearer can instantly distinguish between the information needed for timing a dive and the standard hour and minute display.
Slowing Time Down For The Deep
Powering this new Fifty Fathoms Tech is the Blancpain Manufacture Calibre 13P5A, an automatic movement based on the proven Calibre 1315. The movement operates at 4Hz, or 28,800VpH, while delivering a staggering five-day, or 120-hour, power reserve. For a purpose-built timepiece, this is especially useful, as it means the watch can be taken off for a few days between dives and still be ready when called upon.

Now, where this movement becomes especially interesting is in how Blancpain has reworked it for the dedicated 3-hour dive-time hand. Rather than using the standard minute hand against a traditional 60-minute dive bezel, the brand has adapted the idea of a GMT-style mechanism. This allows Blancpain to slow this specific hand down so that it completes one full rotation over three hours, rather than the 24-hour cycle you would get from a traditional GMT hand. Working in conjunction with the unidirectional 3-hour bezel, this allows divers to track extended underwater sessions with far greater clarity, making the movement itself a central part of the watch’s technical diving purpose.
Initial Thoughts
What I like about this new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech is that it takes an existing concept and evolves it to suit modern divers. This is indeed a real-world, practical timepiece, with the 3-hour bezel indication not being a gimmick or just another visual design element, but something born from the realities of modern diving, where extended bottom times are becoming more and more common.
For divers, underwater photographers and scientists who use closed-circuit rebreathers, a conventional 60-minute bezel simply does not provide enough range. Blancpain has addressed this problem with a solution that still stays true to the original spirit of the Fifty Fathoms.
Now, at 47mm in case size and with a thickness of 14.81mm, this is not a watch for everyone, and that is okay, as I was not planning on going deep diving for three hours anytime soon anyway! The thing is, the watch is not trying to be suited for everyone. This is a specialised instrument, and I think that is exactly where the appeal lies. It also comes with an interchangeable strap system, with the watch supplied on an orange rubber strap, while black and white rubber straps are available separately as optional choices.
The new Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech is bold, highly functional and deeply connected to Blancpain’s ocean exploration heritage, making it one of the more interesting modern expressions of the Fifty Fathoms collection.
