Like many avid watch enthusiasts, I hold Grand Seiko in high regard. They bring so many different elements to the table that make watchmaking not only enjoyable for us collectors and enthusiasts, but also make us appreciate the extensive craftsmanship that goes on behind the scenes. This, as I’m sure you may have noticed, is a common approach within Japanese watchmaking. Being a long-time fan of Seiko as well, I see very similar DNA in the two brands, and rightly so, as Grand Seiko was born to offer a more luxurious and higher-end calibre of watchmaking, building on Seiko’s origins.

What really grabs my attention with Grand Seiko is their attention to detail, craftsmanship, and how they draw on Japanese nature for their intricately designed dials. The brand’s Evolution 9 collection is a further development of this established design identity. The first model to showcase what we now know as the Evolution 9 identity arrived in 2020 with the SLGH002. Two years later, in 2022, Grand Seiko formally introduced the Evolution 9 collection, building upon this design, a now signature line within the brand’s current offerings.
As I mentioned earlier, nature has always been central to Grand Seiko’s dial designs, and the Evolution 9 Collection features some of my favourite interpretations. Within the collection, there are several different variations of Japanese nature and its beautiful elements.
One of these is the Green Birch interpretation, which first appeared in the SLGH011 model in 2022. This dial takes inspiration from the white birch forests near Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. One of its distinctive elements is the birch texture, which, when combined with the green tones, resembles the forest’s vitality.
Announced in June 2026, the SLGH033 continues the original design of the SLGH011 as part of the collection’s modern update. There have been several refinements to this model, including Ever-Brilliant Steel and a bracelet with micro-adjustment, giving us more to enjoy from this timepiece beyond the dial and exceptional movement.
Initial Impressions of The Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033
Recently, I took my first-ever trip to Japan, and while I already had high expectations before touching down, my appreciation for the country’s natural beauty only deepened as I set about exploring it. You see, experiencing Japan’s stunning locations and beautiful nature firsthand gave me a much more personal connection to these nature-inspired dials from Grand Seiko. I’ve always been a long-time admirer of Seiko and Grand Seiko, but that trip certainly solidified my appreciation for Japanese watchmaking.

Grand Seiko’s exceptional ability to capture the beauty of Japanese landscapes through vibrant colours and textures is something that certainly appeals to me. When I was offered several Grand Seiko models to review, the green SLGH033 immediately stood out. I’ve always appreciated coloured dials, and with several vibrant examples already in my collection, I was naturally drawn to the SLGH033’s dark forest green, which offers a balance between restrained design and eye-catching appeal.
Upon first handling it, it’s safe to say that the dial is the centre of attention. The green appears much darker at certain angles, which I think adds to the model’s allure and gives it a more everyday character than a brighter, more vibrant green might offer. It still has that touch of colour that I personally love, but with enough restraint that I could easily picture it fitting into my own collection!
Sculpted Steel With A Refined Edge
The case features a sporty yet refined character, which is one of the design elements I do appreciate about Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 Collection. Its faceted, architectural design gives the watch a luxurious appearance, while its overall styling makes it versatile enough to wear to both casual and formal occasions.

The case proportions offer a versatile wearing experience as well, with a 40 mm diameter, an 11.7 mm thickness, and a lug-to-lug measurement of just 47 mm. Given my smaller wrist size of approximately 16 cm, these measurements feel just right, especially the lug-to-lug distance, which keeps the case from extending beyond the edges of my wrist. At 11.7 mm thick, the case also retains a substantial presence without feeling too top-heavy.
But what gives the case its appeal is its multifaceted design and sculpted lugs, which help create that architectural aesthetic. As you turn the watch, especially under the light, these distinct surfaces become much more noticeable. This is thanks to the contrast between the brushed surfaces and the Zaratsu-polished facets.
While the green dial initially attracted me to this watch, the smaller details revealed up close made me appreciate it even more. Details such as the way the polished bezel and faceted indices reflect light together, to create a visual connection between the case and dial itself.

The SLGH033 also uses Ever-Brilliant Steel, which gives the case practical benefits beyond its shape and finishing. The material’s main advantage lies in its increased corrosion resistance, supporting Grand Seiko’s emphasis on longevity. Its resistance to pitting corrosion is measured by a PREN above 40, significantly higher than the figure of approximately 25 for conventional stainless steel used in watchmaking.
Another signature detail of the Evolution 9 Collection is the three-link bracelet, also crafted from Ever-Brilliant Steel, which continues the case’s combination of practicality and visual appeal through brushed surfaces and polished detailing. If there were one thing I would change about this timepiece, however, it would be the overall bracelet design.
While its carefully executed finishing gives it a more luxurious appearance, the three-link layout does resemble those found on some Seiko models. Personally, I feel a watch of this calibre could benefit from a more distinctive and slightly more refined bracelet aesthetic.
With these new Evolution 9 models, however, Grand Seiko has considered practicality, with the clasp adding a welcome improvement through tool-free micro-adjustment, offering 6 mm of adjustment in 2 mm increments. My wrist size does tend to change depending on the temperature, so this adjustability is something I particularly appreciate, especially as we head into the Australian summer!
The Green Birch Comes To Life
As mentioned previously, this 2026 edition, the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033, builds on the White Birch SLGH005 introduced in 2021 and the green interpretation of the SLGH011 that followed in 2022. These designs take inspiration from the white birch forests near Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where the brand’s mechanical watches are manufactured.
The SLGH033 continues this connection to the white birch forests, combining that recognisable textured birch pattern with a rich, deep forest green. The inspiration for the dial extends beyond the green foliage to the slender white trunks amongst it, with the combination of colour and texture giving added character and depth to the design.
Given my appreciation for coloured dials, this was the model that immediately stood out amongst the other Evolution 9 timepieces available for review. I also particularly like this deep green shade, as it flies a little more under the radar. As mentioned earlier, it can appear a darker green at certain angles before turning to a beautiful, rich green in sunlight. This is exactly what held my attention: how much the watch’s personality changed with light!
The raised and recessed portions of the birch pattern also catch the light differently, making the intricate texture inspired by the trees and their trunks more pronounced. Being able to photograph this watch outdoors certainly gave me the opportunity to appreciate these elements up close and in greater detail. After spending time with it, my appreciation for Grand Seiko’s artistic craftsmanship certainly didn’t fade. If anything, the more closely I looked, the more there was to admire.
Despite the intricate dial pattern and rich green colour, readability is certainly not an issue thanks to the large applied hour indices, broad hour hand, and slimmer minute hand. Grand Seiko’s attention to detail is present in these elements as well. As you can see from the close-up photos, the hands have contrasting facets that catch the light beautifully, shifting from bright to dark depending on the angle and their surroundings.

This detail carries through to the hour indices as well. As mentioned earlier, their pronounced grooves catch the light alongside the bezel, adding another dimension of eye-catching detail to what is already a standout dial.
Normally, I like the date wheel to be colour-matched to the dial, but in this case, I actually appreciate the contrasting white background. With the date window taking the place of the three o’clock hour marker, that lighter colour helps it sit visually alongside the surrounding indices. A green date wheel would blend into the dial more, whereas the white background gives the display a presence that feels consistent with the other hour positions.
High-Beat Performance Meets Japanese Artistry!
Inside this Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033 sits the in-house automatic Calibre 9SA5, which first appeared in 2020 with the SLGH002. Its arrival marked a new generation of Grand Seiko mechanical movements during the brand’s 60th anniversary. What impresses me most about this movement is its high frequency, operating at 5 Hz (36,000 vph), above the common 4 Hz rate found in many mechanical watches. It’s a technical detail I particularly appreciate in a timepiece at this price point.
The movement features a Dual Impulse Escapement, which helps improve energy efficiency. Working alongside twin barrels, this allows the movement to combine its high frequency with an approximately 80-hour power reserve. This is certainly an impressive feat, as a higher frequency generally places greater demands on the available energy. Combining that high beat rate with such a substantial reserve makes the watch practical as well as beautiful to wear.

Turn the watch around, and you are treated to contrasting matte surfaces and polished edges that make the movement visually attractive as well. While much of the mechanism sits beneath the bridges, we can still see the balance wheel in full operation, alongside the skeletonised rotor engraved with “HI-BEAT 36000 POWER RESERVE 80 HOURS”.
Just like the dial, the movement also takes inspiration from scenery in Japan. The curved bridge outlines draw inspiration from Mount Iwate and the nearby Shizukuishi River. While this isn’t something you might immediately notice, for me, it makes the connection to Japan’s natural beauty feel much more considered, extending from the dial right through to the movement!
How Does Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033 Wear?
The dial may have been what initially caught my attention, but would the experience on the wrist make me want to add this watch to my own collection? In terms of fit, it certainly made a strong case! On my 16 cm wrist, the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033 felt well proportioned. While its 40 mm case diameter is slightly larger than I would normally choose for a watch of this character, its strength lies in the relatively short lug-to-lug distance of 47 mm.

For my wrist size, an ideal lug-to-lug measurement is somewhere between 46 and 47 mm. This puts the case at the upper end of my preferred range, sitting just right without extending beyond the edges of my wrist. What I also like about the proportions is that the 40 mm diameter gives the White Birch dial plenty of room to showcase the depth of its textured finishing.

At 11.7 mm thick, you certainly notice the watch’s presence on the wrist. As you can see from the side-profile photos, it has enough height that slipping it beneath a tighter jacket cuff may take a little adjustment. Personally, however, I do like my sportier timepieces to have a bit of presence when worn. While a thinner profile makes sense for a traditional dress watch, the Evolution 9’s sportier design suits a little more substance. I felt the SLGH033 struck a good balance without becoming too bulky or uncomfortable to wear.
I also liked the case’s faceted and angular design, especially the mixture of polished and satin-brushed surfaces. As mentioned in the Case Design section, the Evolution 9 has an architectural character that starts with the faceted indices and hands and carries through to the bezel and overall case profile. This creates a cohesive appearance, with the different surfaces, particularly the polished sections, catching the light as I moved my wrist. For a luxury watch with a sportier design, this is something I certainly appreciated.
The bracelet was comfortable to wear as well, and while the links are quite large, they still articulated well around the contours of my wrist. These broad links also carry through the substantial proportions of the case, creating a nicely balanced overall design. Personally, however, as mentioned previously, I do think the Evolution 9 Collection could benefit from an update to the bracelet’s appearance. Incorporating more polished sections into the link design could help it catch the light just as nicely as the case, bezel, and dial elements do.
One of the biggest highlights of the bracelet, however, is the micro-adjustment system. As mentioned earlier, it offers 6 mm of tool-free adjustment in 2 mm increments. This addition alone makes wearing the watch so much more practical. With a leather or rubber strap, you can generally change the fit by moving between the buckle holes. A steel bracelet usually requires tools to alter its sizing, so having adjustment built into the clasp makes a welcome difference.
Being able to adjust the bracelet on the go adds to the watch’s appeal as a daily wearer, especially with the hot Australian summer just around the corner. My wrist does tend to change size depending on the temperature, so having this extra flexibility without needing tools is certainly welcome.
Beyond its comfort on the wrist, the focal point of this latest White Birch edition remains that stunning green dial. Its brighter appearance in these photos demonstrates how the forest green can stand out while still looking appropriate with smarter clothing, such as blazers. It feels equally at home with more casual attire, with enough restraint in the colour to make it easy to pair with different outfits. The combination of the steel bracelet, sculpted case, and intricate dial gives this watch a sporty yet refined character. Honestly, what more could you want from an everyday watch with that balance?
Final Thoughts
My appreciation for Japanese watchmaking, as well as that beautiful forest green dial, initially drew me to the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033. However, during my time wearing it, the finer details made me appreciate the watch even more. Seeing the textured birch pattern outdoors in the sunlight strengthened my appreciation for the craftsmanship behind the Evolution 9 Collection.
This craftsmanship carries through to the finer details, such as the indices and hands, and extends to the bezel and the case’s faceted, angular profile. The polished surfaces catch the light as you move your wrist, drawing attention beyond the dial and giving me just as much reason to appreciate the watch as a whole.

And while I do think the bracelet design could be improved, its wearability left me with little to complain about. The tool-free micro-adjustment allows the fit to be fine-tuned as needed, making it easier to keep the bracelet snug and comfortable as your wrist changes size throughout the day.
With the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGH033 priced at AUD $14,500, I feel it packs a lot of punch for the money. One comparable model is the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Master Chronometer in turquoise, reference 220.10.41.21.03.006, which is approximately AUD $2,750 cheaper. However, it has larger dimensions, measuring 41 mm in diameter, 13.3 mm thick and 47.9 mm lug-to-lug. Those proportions suggest a different wearing experience, while the Grand Seiko’s dimensions already suit my wrist well.
And while both models offer striking dial colours, for me, the Grand Seiko’s textured pattern and deep forest green evoke a stronger emotional connection. Combined with Grand Seiko’s high standard of craftsmanship, mechanical substance, and the comfort I experienced on the wrist, this makes the SLGH033 a watch certainly worth considering for those looking for a versatile everyday timepiece with a sporty yet refined character!
