Ulysse Nardin charts a new course with the Freak X, unveiling a trio of new-gen references which have been massively overhauled.

The Ulysse Nardin Freak is one of the most unconventional watches ever made. Over the course of its 25-year lifespan, the Freak collection has defined a new era of modern avant-garde watchmaking with its unique approach to timekeeping. It’s almost serendipitous that it also coincides with the 180th anniversary of Ulysse Nardin as a whole, making 2026 a double celebration of incredible watchmaking.

So how do you bring one of the most unusual watches of all time into the modern world? Well, you continue to modernise it. Ulysse Nardin showed evidence of this direction back in 2019, releasing the Freak X, which made the line feel more familiar to prospective enthusiasts without compromising its identity.

Now, after six years, Ulysse Nardin presents the second generation of the Freak X. But the updates aren’t just aesthetic; The latest Freak X completely overhauls the original concept into what is arguably the most wearable and practical Freak ever produced.

Little Freak

The new-generation Freak X, most notably, refines everything that made the Freak line so beloved while offering it in a more compact package. The case diameter has been reduced from 43mm to 41mm, making it wear much closer to modern preferences. Combined with a 47.3mm lug-to-lug measurement and a 13.6mm thickness, the new Freak X collection is accessible to just about anybody.

The case has also undergone a complete redesign, with the previous modular architecture replaced by a monobloc construction available in either 80% recycled steel or 18k rose gold. Water resistance has also doubled, increasing from 50m to 100m thanks to a screw-down crown, cementing the new Freak X as an avant-garde sports watch.

Wearability has also been enhanced through a completely revised bracelet and strap system. For the first time, the Freak X is offered on an integrated steel bracelet crafted from the same 80% recycled steel, complete with micro-adjustment capabilities. Again, this shift towards customer convenience integrated into the design is one I, and many others, have long desired from the luxury watch world.

To see Ulysse Nardin embrace that is yet another feather in the cap for the independent brand. The grey dial and rose gold variants are both offered on either calfskin or alligator leather straps that complement each design’s individual character. However, swapping between them is always welcome thanks to Ulysse Nardin’s quick-release system.

Classic Colours

Visually, the watch remains unmistakable. It’s still a Freak, after all, but it bears a more refined aesthetic than its previous counterparts. As always, the carousel movement remains the focal point, rotating once every 60 minutes to indicate the minutes while a pointer mounted on a rotating disc displays the hours.

The updated design introduces a greater sense of familiarity through its more cohesive case construction and improved finishing. The new glassbox crystal, in particular, offers a less obstructed viewing experience in conjunction with the slimmer bezel, giving the carousel more room to shine.

Finishing has also received considerable attention throughout the watch. The movement features a richer combination of satin-brushed, polished and grained surfaces, while the oscillator bridge and time-indicating elements are hand bevelled.

Applied hour markers filled with white lume replace the previous indices, adding depth to the display while improving low-light legibility. Offered in three new colourways, sandblasted grey, sunray-brushed blue fumé, and sandblasted black and gold, the new trio of Freak X models are thoroughly modernised, refined evolutions of the original aesthetic.

Micromanaged

But while the visual presentation has seen several meaningful revisions, it’s the new movement that truly defines this new generation of the Freak X. Through the display caseback, Ulysse Nardin introduces the Calibre UN-232, an automatic movement beating at 3Hz (21,600VpH) with a capable 72-hour power reserve.

Alongside the carousel movement, another returning feature is the use of DIAMonSIL escapements, renowned for their reduced friction, increased hardness and long-term durability. They make their first appearance in the Freak X line. What makes the Calibre UN-232 so compelling, though, is the use of a new micro-rotor winding system, keeping the dimensions compact while maintaining efficient winding performance. Decorated with an elegant colimaçon (spiral) finish, it introduces a welcome sense of warmth to an otherwise highly technical aesthetic.

Initial Thoughts

For the longest time, the Ulysse Nardin Freak benefited from being an outsider. A maverick among mavericks, there has never been, nor will there likely ever be, another watch quite like the Freak. Yet while Ulysse Nardin has managed to preserve that rebellious identity throughout the new-generation Freak X line, it has also given the modern watch world everything enthusiasts now want and need in a watch.

From refining the aesthetics and introducing a micro-rotor movement to adding the everyday conveniences that improve wearability, Ulysse Nardin is showing that it is taking the new era of watchmaking incredibly seriously. Never before has the Ulysse Nardin Freak been so accessible to so many wrists, and this latest release is bound to captivate the Freak within us all.
