Just over a year after introducing the TYPE 7 as part of its 15th anniversary celebrations, Ressence is expanding the collection with two new colourways: Black and Cactus.

Ressence’s Type 7 is designed to be the Belgian brand’s everyday tool watch. Clean lines, a well-proportioned size, and light-weight. The latest additions build on the platform established by the original Night Blue and limited-edition XV Aquamarine models, offering two distinctly different looks while retaining the same technical architecture that makes the TYPE 7 one of the brand’s most practical and wearable creations.

As an interpretation of a modern tool watch, the TYPE 7 combines the brand’s signature oil-filled display with a Grade 5 titanium case, integrated bracelet and GMT functionality. The new models continue that formula, adding fresh dial colours and matching rubber strap options.

A Tool Watch The Ressence Way

When Ressence unveiled the TYPE 7 in 2025, it marked a new direction for the independent Belgian watchmaker. While the brand had already established itself through its orbital display system and oil-filled dials, the TYPE 7 brought those innovations into a more robust, everyday package.

Cactus Green or Black? the new Ressence TYPE 7 models.

The watch features a 41mm Grade 5 titanium case paired with an integrated titanium bracelet, giving it a lightweight feel on the wrist despite its substantial presence. Yes, it is 14mm thick, but it wears a little smaller than you would expect, thanks to the case design, and some of this thickness is in the domed oil-filled crystal.

It has a water resistance rated to 50 metres, while the addition of a second time zone display makes it one of the most practical watches in the current Ressence lineup. As with previous TYPE 7 models, both the Black and Cactus editions feature a fixed ceramic bezel, chosen for its durability and resistance to wear.

The TYPE 7 Black

Of the two new releases, the TYPE 7 Black is arguably the more versatile of the two thanks to its monochrome colour scheme.

The oil-filled dial system already creates the illusion that the display is printed directly onto the sapphire crystal, and the deep black backdrop amplifies that effect even further. It almost gives the impression of an LCD screen on the watch, even though it is not, with the bright white indications standing out sharply against the dark surface.

A disply that looks digitally done, but it’s not.

The combination of black, white, and titanium feels particularly well-suited to the TYPE 7’s tool-watch character. It is a clean, highly functional aesthetic that puts readability front and centre while maintaining the futuristic design language for which Ressence has become known for.

Introducing Cactus Green

Alongside the Black edition, Ressence has also introduced a new green dial variant: the Cactus (green). Out of the two, this is the most “statement piece” of either, with the green being quite eye-catching, especially when paired with the green rubber strap.

Cactus Green is an appropriate name for the new TYPE 7

Rather than opting for a bright or vibrant green, the brand has developed a warmer tone designed specifically to complement the natural colour of Grade 5 titanium. The result is a dial that feels integrated with the case and bracelet, with the soft green hue working particularly well against the glass-pearl finish of the titanium surfaces, without losing any of its wrist presence.

The colour adds a different personality to the TYPE 7 collection, offering something more relaxed and contemporary while retaining the same technical complexity beneath the dial. For those who have read my articles for a while, you know I do like green on a watch, so this one is right up my alley. Although I’ll preface this by saying I’ve not seen this in person yet.

Strap Change For A New Look

Both new models are available with colour-matched rubber straps in addition to the integrated titanium bracelet, giving you a little flexibility on how you want your TYPE 7 to look and feel on the wrist. The integrated titanium bracelet has a more premium look to it, and includes 5 positions of micro-adjustment in the clasp for those hotter days.

While the bracelet remains central to the TYPE 7’s design, the rubber option gives owners an easy way to change the watch’s overall character. Beyond reducing overall weight, the strap introduces a sportier feel that suits the watch’s everyday versatility. And for those who are like me, and the weight of a full titanium watch plays with your head, the rubber strap does fix this.

Swapping the bracelet for the strap gives the watch a whoel new look.

The quick shift between bracelet and rubber strap further reinforces the TYPE 7’s position as one of the more adaptable watches in the Ressence catalogue, however, we don’t believe it has a quick-change system, so you may need a springbar tool to change them over.

Powered By The ROCS 7

At the heart of both new models is Ressence’s patented ROCS 7 display module, driven by a customised automatic calibre, based on an ETA base, although highly modified by Ressence to accommodate the dial display and functionality.

The display replaces traditional hands with a series of rotating discs that continuously orbit around the dial. Alongside the hours and minutes, the watch displays a GMT indication, oil temperature display and a 120-second runner that also acts as a shock absorber indicator.

The caseback is designed to wind the watch, losing the need for a crown.

Like other Ressence models, time setting and winding are handled through the caseback using the brand’s Ressence Compression Lock System, eliminating the need for a conventional crown and helping maintain the clean profile of the case. It is a cool feature that not many other brands use, and suits the TYPE 7 architecture well.

Initial Thoughts

Ressence is a brand that grows on you. At first, the design and style are unconventional in the traditional sense, but the use of the oil-filled dial and the interesting way Ressence tells the time via the rotating dial and sub-dials, almost like a satellite hours does, is intriguing. But this is what independent watchmaking is about, something out of the ordinary.

With the TYPE 7, it takes what is ‘normal’ for Ressence, and gives it a more cut-down, minimalist vibe, well, for the brand that is. As the brand says, this is a Ressence tool watch. Lightweight, titanium, on a bracelet or rubber strap and the basic functionality you want in a watch.

On a personal level, I’ve always liked Ressence for what it does. Sporty watches that are a little off the beaten path which offer a little novelty in the way the watches tell time and are just that bit futuristic. They are watches for those who have been through the norm and want to stray a little. And that isn’t a bad thing!
