Seiko gives the Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph a sharper, slimmer, and more balanced evolution for 2026!
Seiko is continuing its 145th anniversary celebrations this year, this time with four new releases for its quartz Astron collection. The brand continues the evolution of its dual-time technology with chronograph functionality, which was first introduced in 2024 as a major update to the Astron collection. Since then, there have been several limited-edition releases and different colourways of the Astron Dual-Time Chronograph.
What makes the Astron stand out in Seiko’s extensive lineup is its impressive accuracy. The original 1969 Quartz Astron was accurate to +/- 0.2 seconds a day, or +/- 5 seconds a month, making it almost 100 times more accurate than the mechanical watches of the era. This is also the model that started the quartz wave in the early 1970s, with Seiko opening many of its quartz-related patents to the world.
Seiko, over the decades, has continually updated the Astron, most notably in 2012 when the collection received its first GPS Solar watch. This model took Seiko’s unparalleled quartz technology and combined it with the ability to receive GPS signals, identify its location, and adjust to the correct local time anywhere on Earth, all while drawing energy from light. Then, as we know, in 2024, Seiko combined GPS Solar technology with Dual-Time technology and chronograph functionality to present a complete package.

Now, for the 2026 editions, Seiko has given the Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph subtle yet meaningful updates that bring a new design generation, rather than just changing dial colours. A total of four editions are being presented. The first three are standard editions: HAB001J, HAB002J, and HAB003J, while the fourth is a limited-edition model, HAB004J, created for the brand’s 145th-anniversary celebrations.
A Future-Shaped Case Built For Travel
The titanium case of these latest Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronographs features the futuristic design that first took shape with the 2012 models, when Seiko revived the Astron name for the GPS Solar Astron. This signature dynamic design is characterised by a multi-faceted, dimensional profile, with the sharp case design complemented by the octagonal bezel. While it’s not a new addition to the Astron collection, this octagonal bezel replaces the multi-faceted bezel with a chronograph scale on the previous generation’s design, and honestly, perfectly suits the Astron’s futuristic case design.

These new editions are also slightly slimmer compared to the 2025 Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronographs. Measuring 43.4mm in diameter, with a lug-to-lug of 50mm, the case has now been slimmed down from 13.4mm to 12.4mm. While this may seem negligible on paper, that 1mm reduction can make a noticeable difference on the wrist, especially for a watch with Astron’s bold case architecture.
A Dial Built Around Balance And Function
The dial also gets a redesign while still keeping the core identity of the Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph intact. As mentioned previously, these GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph editions were first introduced in 2024, with the dial featuring a textured pattern as the backdrop to a 6-9-12 vertical chronograph sub-counter layout. A subtle date window was also integrated into the design between 4 and 5 o’clock, usually colour-matched to the dial.
With the addition of the new Calibre 5X63 movement for these 2026 editions, the dial gets a more traditional layout, with the sub-counters now displayed in a 3-6-9 format. All four of these latest Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronographs feature an interlocking triangular pattern, which acts as a beautiful backdrop to the dial’s futuristic display. It gives the watch a more technical and dimensional look while still keeping the information clear and easy to read.

Seiko is presenting the three standard editions in either light blue with purple sub-counters (HAB001J), a black dial with purple sub-counters, or a black dial with golden elements for a more visually striking effect. Each colourway has its own personality, but for me, the light blue with purple counters is the standout model, as it beautifully balances the striking dial design without being too bold with its colour choices.
The fourth model is, of course, Seiko’s 145th anniversary celebratory edition. Featuring the same titanium case as the other three models, Seiko has given the dial a grey tone that perfectly matches the case aesthetic. Combined with the attractive navy blue sub-dials with sunburst finishing and the navy blue UTC offset scale, the watch has a more distinctive and celebratory feel while still staying true to Astron’s futuristic design language.
New Calibre 5X63 Movement
The new Seiko Calibre 5X63 carries the same functionality as the previous 5X83 movement used in the 2024 and 2025 editions, with the main changes being how the information is displayed on the dial and how it has allowed Seiko to slim down the overall case profile.
The Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph’s capabilities include a perpetual calendar set to February 28, 2100, a world time function for 38 cities, a dual-time function through the 6 o’clock sub-counter, a power reserve indicator, GPS signal reception functions including time zone adjustment, automatic time adjustment, and manual time adjustment, daylight saving time, and a function to prevent GPS signal reception through in-flight mode. These are only the key features, which show just how extensive the capabilities of the Astron are.
Initial Thoughts
The 2026 update to the Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph is meaningful, keeping all the core elements intact while giving the collection a refreshed aesthetic. These new additions come with a more traditional chronograph layout, with the sub-counters positioned horizontally, which I think offers a more balanced look overall.
The three colour schemes for the standard models also give the collection plenty of variety, ranging from a stealthier blacked-out execution to more classic titanium and blue dial combinations. The limited-edition Seiko 145th Anniversary model offers a more contrasting look compared to the standard editions and would have to be my pick, purely for how well the colours have been executed.
With a new movement that offers a slightly slimmer case profile, a quick-change system to seamlessly swap from bracelet to strap, along with a new dial arrangement featuring a unique interlocking triangular pattern, these new Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph editions feel like a thoughtful step forward for the collection. The wheel hasn’t been completely reinvented, but rather tweaked to offer a similar visual styling that has been a signature element of the collection for many years.
For those who want a highly capable modern travel chronograph with plenty of technical character, these latest Astron models make a very compelling case!
