IWC brings the poetic world of Le Petit Prince into the Portofino collection for the very first time, pairing elegant dress-watch design with a beautifully executed day-and-night display!

IWC Schaffhausen has really lit up Watches & Wonders this year with so many standout timepieces, from the space-inspired Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive to the latest Ingenieur releases. What has made the brand’s showing even stronger is that these watches have not all followed the same design language either. Instead, IWC has managed to present a lineup that feels broad and exciting, covering everything from highly technical pieces to more wearable everyday releases, all while staying true to the brand’s strong identity.

The brand has also celebrated 20 years of its collaboration with the heirs of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry through a new Le Petit Prince collection, and we were fortunate enough to get a much closer look at these models, from the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 and Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Le Petit Prince to the beautifully proportioned Perpetual Calendar ProSet editions. Together, these releases show just how well IWC continues to translate the spirit of Le Petit Prince into watchmaking, blending elegant design, strong storytelling, and practical watchmaking into a collection that remains one of the most charming partnerships in the industry.

Now, the final piece from the new Le Petit Prince puzzle comes in the form of the Portofino Day & Night 34 model. This certainly adds a fresh twist to this year’s Le Petit Prince lineup, as it marks the first time the brand has brought the literary magic of this iconic story into the Portofino collection, pairing the line’s elegant and timeless design with the distinctive charm of one of IWC’s most beloved partnerships.

IWC Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 Le Petit Prince
First-ever IWC Portifino with Le Petit Prince design.

Launched in 1984, the Portofino collection is one of IWC Schaffhausen’s longest-running and most established watch families. The collection was born from an unusual idea in the early 1980s, when IWC design head Hanno Burtscher and master watchmaker Kurt Klaus took a historic pocket watch and reimagined it as a minimalist wristwatch. That concept is ultimately what led to the creation of the first Portofino, reference 5251.

This first Portofino did not just have a stylish design, but also featured mechanical brilliance. Not only was it a pocket watch turned into a wristwatch design, but it also came with a moon phase display, elevating the elegant stature of the timepiece into one that also carried a sense of storytelling. Over time, the Portofino became known for a set of enduring design traits, including a minimalist round case, simple hour markers, and restrained dial layouts. These elements helped define it as one of IWC’s purest dress-watch collections.

Bringing the iconic Le Petit Prince design into the Portofino collection takes the watch beyond simply being an elegant dress piece and turns it into something with a beautiful story and emotional charm that the standard models do not usually have. This model is historically significant as the first Portofino dedicated to Le Petit Prince, which gives the collection a fresh new identity while still retaining all the elements that make the Portofino such a timeless design.

And adding this Le Petit Prince design to the collection also shows that IWC can extend its partnership with the heirs of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry beyond the brand’s pilot watches, proving that the theme can work just as beautifully in a more elegant, compact, and dress-focused collection.

A Graceful Case For A Charming Tribute

The case design of the Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 Le Petit Prince stays true to everything that has made the Portofino collection elegant in appearance and beautifully proportioned to sit comfortably on the wrist. This model is crafted from stainless steel and, as the name suggests, measures a compact 34mm, making it perfectly in tune with the dress-watch nature of the collection.

More than that, we can still see the original design concept from Hanno Burtscher and master watchmaker Kurt Klaus, whereby they took the pocket watch design and integrated it into a wearable timepiece. From the domed bezel to the beautifully fully polished case, we can see how that pocket watch inspiration has been reimagined into an elegant timepiece with an even, rounded design. The lugs then flow softly away from the case, helping keep the watch looking graceful on the wrist.

It is quite fitting for Le Petit Prince, with the Portofino already having a petite charm of its own. That softer, more delicate character makes this tribute feel especially natural, as if the story’s poetic and whimsical spirit has found the perfect home within IWC’s most elegant collection.

A Dial Full Of Charm

The dial comes finished in the signature Le Petit Prince deep blue colour, which also features a sunray-brushed finish, giving the timepiece a richer and more distinctive look than the standard silver or white Portofino dials. Through this sunray finish, we are also treated to different shades of the deep blue, alternating from lighter to darker tones depending on the angle of the light.

What I love about this deep blue colour is how well it contrasts against the stainless steel case. The two elements come together beautifully to create an eye-catching aesthetic that can only really be achieved through certain colour combinations. And it is not even just that, but also how the mirror-like polished finishing of the bezel contrasts against the subtle brushed surface of the dial. When you think about it, these are only minor details when you consider what else is happening on the dial of the Portofino.

While this model may be aimed more towards the feminine market with its 34mm case, I could certainly still see its appeal, especially with how elegantly the details of the dial have been executed. Firstly, one of the biggest talking points of this Portofino dial is the use of 12 white diamonds to mark the hours, which instantly elevates the dial and gives the watch a far more luxurious and jewellery-like character. The rose gold-plated hands and baton-style hour markers add to this luxurious look, while also bringing warmth and elegance to the overall design.

The central highlight of this timepiece, of course, is the day-and-night display at 6 o’clock, which rotates over a full 24-hour cycle and adds both function and storytelling to the dial. This display has been executed in a very artistic style, as within it the upper half of the rotating disc reveals a beautifully portrayed sun, while the detailed moon is shown depending on the time of day, giving the complication a poetic quality rather than feeling purely technical. The most charming storytelling detail comes in the form of the Little Prince, who is standing on the moon gazing into a star-filled sky, bringing the literary spirit of the story directly onto the dial in a subtle but meaningful way.

It’s these little details that make this Portofino Le Petit Prince edition stand out for me. Despite its decorative and narrative elements, the dial still remains very much in line with the Portofino’s elegant identity, maintaining a simplistic design nature while preserving that sharp vintage aesthetic.

And this dial works especially well with the Le Petit Prince storytelling. Instead of simply placing a motif or decorative element onto the dial, IWC Schaffhausen has integrated the Prince into the day-and-night indicator itself, making this tribute feel far more thoughtful and complete.

Beautifully Proportioned On The Wrist

With a 34mm case size, this is a genuinely compact design, and on the wrist it wears with the kind of elegance you would expect from the Portofino line. The watch is also relatively slim at 8.9mm thick, which helps it sit neatly and comfortably on the wrist.

I’m a big fan of vintage styling, and from the pocket-watch-inspired rounded case profile to the softly flowing lugs, this watch presents a very traditional aesthetic that has been given new life. It is one of the reasons why I was drawn to the design of this watch in the first place, that, and of course, the beautiful new Le Petit Prince dial.

The dial also doesn’t feel cramped for space or overcomplicated by any means, even with the integration of the day-and-night indicator. But then this has always been the styling of the Portofino, executed brilliantly, with clean proportions, balanced spacing, and an elegant sense of restraint. Even with the added Le Petit Prince storytelling, the watch still feels graceful and easy to read, which is a big part of why the design works so well on the wrist.

And despite the compact 34mm size, the dial still has enough visual presence to make it stand out on the wrist. The deep blue sunray-brushed finish gives the watch its richness and depth, while the gold-plated hands contrast beautifully against it, creating a colour combination that immediately stands out. The diamond hour markers then elevate the piece with a subtle jewellery-like character, yet the display never loses its elegance.

The day-and-night indicator grabs attention thanks to its artistic storytelling, while adding visual weight to the lower half of the dial, which helps the watch feel more substantial when worn. More importantly, it does so without upsetting the Portofino’s balanced design, instead acting as a charming focal point that adds a touch of personality to the display.

The strap also plays a major part in how the watch wears. IWC has paired the Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 Le Petit Prince with a hand-dyed blue alligator leather strap crafted by Santoni, the Italian leather artisan long associated with the brand’s more elevated leather offerings. Santoni plays an important role here, as the company is known for its rich leather craftsmanship and hand-dyeing techniques, which help give the strap a luxurious feel that matches the overall aesthetic of the Portofino, while also adding a depth of colour that pairs beautifully with the signature Le Petit Prince blue.

The Mechanical Heart Of The Story

And ultimately, what makes all of this tick is the mechanical heart that lies underneath. While the Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 Le Petit Prince wins you over first through its elegant proportions and charming storytelling, its the Calibre 35180 that ensures that there is proper substance to this timepiece. This automatic calibre, operating at a high accuracy of 4Hz (28,800 VpH) with a 50-hour power reserve, ensures that the timepiece is practical, and with the added day-and-night indicator, it brings a more poetic layer. One that is perfectly in line with the story of Le Petit Prince.

In that sense, the movement does exactly what it needs to do. Quietly supporting the watch’s graceful character without taking away from the overall elegance of the piece.

Initial Thoughts

IWC has done a really nice job with the Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 Le Petit Prince, because this does not feel like a themed watch where the story has been forced into the Portofino design. Instead, the Le Petite Price elements feel perfectly at home, with the story being carefully integrated so that the design languages of both are kept beautifully intact. From the compact 34mm case, polished surfaces, deep blue dial, and beautifully integrated day-and-night display, all these elements come together to create a watch that feels graceful, balanced, and full of character on the wrist.

And underneath all this charm lies the Calibre 35180, giving the timepiece the mechanical substance to match its poetic design. While the movement itself is not trying to steal the spotlight, it works quietly in the background, powering the display reliably while allowing the day-and-night complication to become a meaningful part of the watch. And the integration of the Le Petit Prince onto this display is what makes the watch feel so special, because it turns a practical complication into something far more poetic and emotionally engaging.

All these details are what make this latest Portofino so special. It is elegant, easy to wear, and story-driven, but still grounded by a movement that gives the watch proper everyday practicality.
