The Grand Seiko SLGB006 may be the quiet achiever of the brand’s Watches & Wonders 2026 lineup, but with its beautifully proportioned case, striking nature-inspired dial, and world-leading U.F.A. movement, it is arguably one of the most complete releases of the year.

Grand Seiko has been releasing some fantastic timepieces during this year’s Watches & Wonders, with some of them being my favourites from the trade fair so far. The Japanese watchmaker really hit it out of the park with its Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver models, a newly redesigned diver collection that many enthusiasts have seriously been loving so far. The re-proportioned cases are all thanks to the Spring Drive U.F.A. movement first introduced in 2025, which, aside from its astonishing accuracy levels, also allows for a smaller and more compact construction.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A Ice Forest at Dawn

The Spring Drive U.F.A. movement, which stands for Ultra Fine Accuracy, was first introduced through the Calibre 9RB2. When it was released, it took the world of horology by storm thanks to its astonishing annual accuracy rating of ±20 seconds per year. This made it the most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring, according to Grand Seiko. Just as impressive as the accuracy, however, was the movement’s compact construction, which has ultimately allowed the brand to create better-proportioned and more wearable case designs.

Grand Seiko is leading the charge with this new Spring Drive U.F.A. movement, and another Watches & Wonders 2026 release to feature it is this limited-edition model, presented in stunning 18k yellow gold with a deep black dial inspired by an “Ice Forest at Dawn.” This piece immediately stood out to me, with the rich black dial contrasting beautifully against the luxurious tones of the 18k yellow gold, creating a watch that feels both elegant and striking at the same time.

An Ice Forest Brought To Life

This Evolution 9 SLGB006 model, as Grand Seiko states, “embodies the scene of a frost-covered wood in silent repose in the Suwa region”. The Evolution 9 Collection has always been about moving Grand Seiko’s design language forward, pairing modern aesthetics with the brand’s unmistakable Japanese sense of beauty. It is not just about style either, as a key part of the Evolution 9 philosophy is the harmonious coexistence between light and shadow, something that translates beautifully here through the way the dial plays with light across its textured surface.

But it’s not just the dial that is the talking point of this timepiece. The ergonomically designed case is just as impressive and, in this instance, plays a vital role in allowing the SLGB006 to truly stand out from the crowd. One of the biggest talking points of the Evolution 9 case design is its lower centre of gravity, which allows the watch to sit closer to the wrist and improves stability when worn. The case also uses wider lugs, which, as Grand Seiko states, “help prevent wobbling and create a more secure fit on the wrist.”

The 37mm x 11.4mm thick case also features a multifaceted structure, with several sharply defined surfaces that allow light to hit it from different angles. In the case of the SLGB006, this means the 18k yellow gold radiates beautifully, especially through the alternating finishing techniques, with brushed surfaces on the bezel, top, and side profiles of the case, while the chamfered edges feature polished finishing that contrasts nicely against them.

For the SLGB006 dial, Grand Seiko has once again looked to nature as the source of its inspiration, embodying the scene of a frost-covered wood in silent repose in the Suwa region, home of Spring Drive. The jet-black dial is brought to life through an intricate forest-inspired texture, with the brand then going a step further by adding gold-coloured specks through a unique coating technique.

These specks are inspired by a phenomenon known as sun pillars, where the morning sunlight reflects off ice crystals suspended in the air, creating the illusion of towering beams of light. And just like many of Grand Seiko’s nature-inspired dials, it gives the SLGB006 a truly atmospheric feel, as if the quiet beauty of a winter sunrise has been captured directly on the wrist.

And it doesn’t stop there. What makes this timepiece really beautiful is the way the textured dial stands out in its own right against the bold 18-karat yellow gold tones of the hour indices and hands. I also especially love the execution of the date window. By replacing the 3 o’clock hour marker, it retains the balanced design of the dial, and with the date wheel colour-matched as closely as possible, it integrates seamlessly without drawing unnecessary attention away from the stunning texture.

A New Benchmark In Annual Accuracy

Grand Seiko’s pursuit of precision is admirable, but it is also what has led them to create the most accurate wristwatch in the world. This Ultra-Fine-Accuracy movement was the end result of eight years of rnd, from initial conception to the final product. Its headline figure is an astonishing annual accuracy of ±20 seconds per year, with Grand Seiko stating that as roughly ±3 seconds per month, while also offering an impressive 72-hour power reserve, a truly remarkable achievement in watchmaking.

A big part of what makes the Spring Drive U.F.A so special is the newly developed technology inside. The temperature-compensating integrated circuit helps manage the effects that temperature changes can have on quartz oscillation within the Spring Drive system. The movement’s temperature data is said to be measured and used for compensation on an ongoing basis, with Grand Seiko also stating that the Integrated circuit inside the Spring Drive system collects temperature data 540 times per day to help maintain this incredible rate of accuracy.

Initial Thoughts

Grand Seiko continues to prove at Watches & Wonders 2026 that this is one of the most creative and technically capable watchmakers in the industry, a brand that is most certainly not to be overlooked. I mean, what more could you want from a timepiece? The ideally proportioned case at just 37mm x 11.4mm thick, with a lug-to-lug distance of just 44.3mm, ensures that it’ll wear just right on the wrist, while the design itself is not just ergonomic, but also has style and elegance.

And then we have the dial design. Not many brands come close to the artisanal dials that Grand Seiko puts out time and time again, and in my opinon they are and in my opinion, they are among the very best in the industry when it comes to translating nature into something truly captivating on the wrist.

When it comes to the SLGB006, it truly does look like perfection, as from a distance the watch will look jet black, which, when mixed with the 18k yellow gold indices and hands, provides an elegant and luxurious aesthetic that is visually attractive on its own. But, as you take a closer look, you see the true beauty of the dial, with its textured surface and gold-coloured specks revealing the quiet, atmospheric scene of a frost-covered wood illuminated by the first light of dawn.

And if that wasn’t enough, then you have the world’s most accurate movement sitting inside. Elevating the SLGB006 from a beautifully executed dress watch to a serious showcase of Grand Seiko’s technical mastery as well. While the Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A Ushio 300 Diver models have been the main event for the brand for Watches & Wonders 2026, and understandably so, this is quietly becoming my favourite release from them this year!
