Longines’ New Releases Set to Conquer the Market

by Mario C

Longines, at long last, fully revamps the Conquest collection! This slew of new releases includes 30mm, 34mm, 38mm, and new 42mm chronograph variations.

At Longines, versatility has always been the name of the game, and I doubt you’d find someone who disagrees. They have it all: an in-house manufactory as part of the Swatch Group, nearly two centuries’ worth of heritage, and an excellent value proposition for both entry-level enthusiasts and horological connoisseurs.

Where they seem to falter – at least in my demographic – is the lack of modern and contemporary designs. I’m all for timelessness and heritage-inspired timepieces, but repeatedly going back into the archive to release old designs as new tends to make one question a brand’s penchant for originality. Because of this, Longines is at risk of being eventually written off as the ‘old man’s watch brand.’

Longines seemed to become acutely aware of this in 2023. They worked to bolster their modern Hydroconquest lineup with a new GMT and commenced a remaster of the similarly modern Conquest. For its 70th Anniversary, the Conquest’s overhaul is complete, starring new releases is 30mm, 34mm, 38mm, and expanding on their 42mm chronograph variations. Here are all of the newest releases that you should keep an eye on from Longines!

Conquest 30mm

Starting with the 30mm ladies’ collection, Longines has taken the design language set by last year’s Conquest releases and slimmed it down to a demure 30mm. Until now, the only way you could get a Longines Conquest in a ~30mm size was to purchase the quartz 29.5mm renditions. These older models are rather unremarkable in their current state, so the modern design language of the new Conquest was a much-needed update to this size range.

Available in a slim 9.7mm frame, this Conquest line comes in four dial colours: silver, blue, green, and a mother-of-pearl dial. A diamond-set bezel option is also available for the mother-of-pearl piece.

Conquest 34mm

Part of Longines’ remaster of the Conquest lineup was the addition of several 34mm timepieces, some complete with diamond indexes or a diamond bezel. As beautiful as these references are, I suspect some may have been disappointed with the lack of aesthetic adventurousness. Thankfully, then, it seems like Longines has answered the call.

To remedy the optionality, Longines has produced seven new variations on the 34mm x 10.9mm Conquest! The trademark green, silver, and blue dials appear in two-tone rose gold variations, as does the new purple dial reference. Also making their debut are three more exotic colours ice blue, pistachio green and hot pink, with all references complete with colour-matching rubber strap options! The silver two-tone, however, has been given a red rubber strap variation, whilst the mother-of-pearl with diamond bezel now has a white rubber strap option as well.

Conquest 38mm

While last year’s Conquest 41mm remasters garnered worldwide acclaim, one major gripe that many enthusiasts had was that the 41mm variation was too large for most wrists. Despite being a small-wristened man, I do enjoy wearing my larger watches, but I understand the appeal of wanting a more modestly sized timepiece.

Longines has also got you covered on that aspect, too, with five new 38mm x 10.9mm references! These are essentially shrunken-down versions of the already released 41mm, sharing the same design language and dial colours. However, there is one reference that the 41mm doesn’t have, which is the 38mm in a beautiful champagne dial. They do have a darker brown, however, so I suppose it’s up to your preference – but I would pick the champagne.

  • Dial: Selection of Silver, Green, Blue, Black & Champagne

Conquest Chronograph 42mm

Finally, the newest Conquest chronographs – Longines released a few 42mm x 14.3mm versions of the watch last year to widespread positive reception, and it seems this year they are adding three more references into the mix.

As much as I liked the original three releases, it was the Marco Odermatt Special Edition that really caught my attention. Thankfully, it seems these fresh references are following the same aesthetic form, with a blue and green panda as well as a champagne reverse panda model. For my money, that green is an absolute knockout!

As was the case with the rest of the chronograph lineup, these new pieces are powered by the L898.5 chronograph movement, with a 4Hz (28,800bph) beat rate backed by a 59h power reserve. These Longines chronographs set the standard for the Conquest’s contemporary aesthetic, and seats them firmly in the running for one of the best chronograph offerings at this price point.

Quick Specs:

  • References: L3.835.4.98.6  (Blue Panda),  L3.835.4.02.6  (Green Panda), L3.835.4.32.9 (Champagne Reverse Panda)
  • Case Material: Stainless steel
  • Dial: Selection of Silver, Green, Blue, Black & Champagne
  • Movement: In-house automatic L898.5 chronograph movement
  • Beat Rate: 4Hz (28,800bph)
  • Power Reserve: 59h
  • Water Resistance: 100m (10bar)

Final Thoughts

For years, despite Longines’ versatility, they never had that ‘GADA’ watch – the piece that could Go Anywhere, Do Anything. I always found that the problem with Longines is that you can never just stop at one – every watch was perfect for one situation, but the Saint-Imier brand never had a ‘jack-of-all-trades.’

With these newest releases, it’s become apparent that Longines is looking to fill that gap. The updated Conquest collection is undoubtedly their take on the ‘GADA’ watch, combining their signature horological skill with modern style not apparent in the rest of the roster. I believe that the Conquest will help further Longines’ timeless appeal, and will cement their reputation with the next generation of watch enthusiasts.
