Did TAG Heuer Just Release The Best Watch Commercial Of The Year?

by Matt Clymo

If the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph “Glassbox” was one of the best Chronograph releases of the year, then they’ve just released what could be the best watch commercials of the year, with a 5 minute Hollywood action comedy short film staring Ryan Gosling.

Hot off the heels of their releases at Watches and Wonders, TAG Heuer have teamed up with Ryan Gosling, Saturday Night Live star Vanessa Bayer and Director, David Leitch (Bullet Train) in an short action comedy that shows off the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph in a way no other brand could.

Launching Thursday night in London to a packed crowd, the stars of the film and other ambassadors, like Patrick Dempsey, Alexandra Daddario and Jacob Elordi helped to premier the film that showcases the TAG Heuer Carrera alongside (or should I say worn by) Ryan Gosling as he battles Bayer as she attempts to take his beloved TAG Heuer Carrera off his wrist – something Gosling doesn’t plan on letting her do!

Produced by David Leitch’s 87 North – responsible for some of the most iconic action films of the last decade, from John Wick to Deadpool 2, to last year’s Bullet Train– and directed by Nash Edgerton (Mr Inbetween), Gosling shot The Chase for Carrera while working with Leitch on feature The Fall Guy in Australia. Both Gosling and Leitch contributed to The Chase for Carrera’s creative and the result is pure box-office.

“We chose London for this special evening as the UK is such an important part of the brand, one of our biggest markets and a country of watch lovers and racing enthusiasts. And we are extremely excited to celebrate the 60th Carrera anniversary by unveiling a very special film”

Frédéric Arnault, CEO of TAG Heuer

It won’t be the last time that Gosling and the Carrera will star together. They will also be teaming up in director Leitch’s next major feature, The Fall Guy. While the TAG Heuer brand ambassador can be seen wearing the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph with signature blue dial here, in The Fall Guy, Gosling will be wearing the sportier black and silver “reverse panda” dial of the same edition.

Product placement front and centre – and we love it!

This is a great bit of fun, and TAG Heuer has really embraced the kitsch nature of the action comedy genre mixed with advertising and product placement. I mean where else do see brands creating a movie for an ad that is about a movie for an ad with the stars playing themselves as characters in a movie? I think Ryan Gosling sums this up when he says “I can’t tell what’s real anymore!” at the start. Confusing? Yes. Cool? Most definitely.

The Hollywood action-comedy also features five other hints that speaks to the history, including significant names, notable numbers and a glimpse of another iconic figure. We won’t tell what these are, so you’re just going to have to watch the film below and spot them for yourself. We can’t wait to see more of this from TAG Heuer, but in the meantime, sit back and enjoy the film!
