Independent watchmaker Laurent Ferrier expands his classic collection with the Classic Moon Dusk, a warm reinterpretation of his masterful craftsmanship.
Laurent Ferrier is a brand solely for those that know. A standout independent watchmaker among independent watchmakers, the brand has become unmistakable for its high level of refinement and commitment to traditional watchmaking practices. Need any proof? Look no further than the 2010 GPHG awards, where Laurent Ferrier won an award in the same year it was founded.
Since then, the watches have remained stellar in both aesthetic and mechanical excellence. And between the two collections, the simply named Classic and Sport, there’s a Laurent Ferrier for any kind of elegant tastemaker. In 2024, the brand released a new collection in its Classic series: the Classic Moon, marking its very first moonphase complication. Until this year, the Classic Moon collection only comprised two references in silver and blue. However, Geneva Watch Days 2026 has a tendency to bring the best out of watchmakers everywhere, and Laurent Ferrier has stepped up to the occasion.
Sunset Overdrive
This is the new Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Dusk. For those familiar with the Laurent Ferrier silhouette, the form should be of no surprise. In its smooth, pebble-shaped case, the watch stands at the same 40mm case diameter and 12.9mm thickness as its peers. As opposed to the previous two iterations of the Classic Moon, this is the first time that the watch has been showcased in a case of 18k yellow gold.
The added warmth, unlike the steel and rose gold iterations, gives the watch a heightened elegance and wrist presence. The ball-shaped crown, stepped bezel, and flowing lugs compound the watch’s identity, allowing it to feel every bit like the refined dress watch it was born to be.
Continuing the warm appearance, the Classic Moon Dusk comes outfitted on a brown leather strap, terminating at a material-matched yellow gold pin buckle. With the matte finish of the strap contrasting against the predominantly polished golden case, it permits the Laurent Ferrier to stand out as a contemporary take on an extremely classical silhouette. Water resistant to 30m, it’s built apropos to dress watch specifications, cementing it as the perfect timepiece for any special occasion.
Tan Lines
Where the Classic Moon Dusk also differs from the rest of its peers is in its design inspiration. Where Laurent Ferrier’s naming conventions are rather straightforward, Classic Moon Silver, Classic Moon Blue, and so forth, ‘Dusk’ certainly sparks more of a conceptual identity. That’s precisely the idea with this watch, as it’s inspired by the last drops of light before the sun falls out of the sky into the night.
This golden-hour aesthetic is first established by its case material of choice, but it soon becomes further apparent in the dial. The Classic Moon Dusk uses a grained opaline finish alongside a fumé gradient that moves from a central taupe to brown at the borders.
Visible against the brown periphery are the date numerals, finished in a similar tan tone as the dial’s centre. A railroad minute track in white separates the numerals from the indexes and Roman quarter numerals, with each indicated by a pair of similarly whitened hands. A golden hand breaks up the white scenery, pointing to each outer numeral in accordance with the date.
The small seconds subdial at six o’clock reveals the moonphase complication, which is completely visible save for two translucent yellow sections on the left and right of the subdial. These indicate when the moon is out of view for both the northern and southern hemispheres, though the two white moons eventually make their way out to peek out once more.
Finally, the cutaway above the Laurent Ferrier typeface gives way to a set of day and month indicators, done in stark contrasting black with white text for maximum visibility. Overall, it’s a well-thought-out design that wears its inspiration well, and furthers the classy nature of the watch without becoming too extravagant.
Finest Of Fine
Horologically speaking, though, it’s hard to get more extravagant than this. Beating away behind the open caseback is Laurent Ferrier’s Cal. LF126.02 manual-wind movement. A picture of excellence, the watch beats at a steady 3Hz atop a stable 80-hour power reserve, all of which is visible on the rear-facing power reserve indicator. Central to the movement is its annual calendar complication, which automatically adjusts for odd months with 31 days as the year progresses.
The only time an annual calendar will need to be adjusted is if it’s run out of power, or if it’s a leap year on 29 February. Interestingly, the annual calendar was historically made before the perpetual calendar, which is bizarre given the added complexity afforded to the perpetual. In any case, though, the Cal. LF126.02 remains a beast of modern watchmaking, though finished in the same classical, highly refined style as the watch itself.
Initial Thoughts
Laurent Ferrier is perhaps among the few brands that are adored by both enthusiasts and other independent watchmakers alike. The mind behind the eponymous brand has elevated traditional watchmaking with his creative vision, and the Classic Moon Dusk is simply yet another feather in an already decorated cap.
While the design is more conceptual than most, it’s one that works spectacularly in the metal as much as it does in the photos. Compounded by an incredible movement, wearable dimensions, and a unique sense of style, this is certainly one of the highlights of the entire week for me.
