Watches & Wonders 2026: Vacheron Constantin has developed a new ultra-slim calibre, debuting it in a new full-platinum Overseas – a first for the collection.
In my opinion, Vacheron keeps kicking goals and has been on a great run over the last couple of years. The Overseas collection is a modern classic and a crowd favourite, so it’s no surprise that Vacheron Constantin has decided that 2026 is the year to double down on the collection. And double down, they have!
Vacheron Constantin, in keeping with the brand’s guiding principle, “Do better if possible, and that is always possible” has today unveiled a brand new calibre, seven years in the making. At the same time, the new Calibre’s home is in another first for Vacheron – a full platinum Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin model, limited to 255 individually numbered pieces.
The new watch and calibre speak to the DNA of Vacheron 100%, and showcases why the brand is who they are today, and after 271 years now, still going strong.
A New Calibre of Calibre
Vacheron Constantin have been making ultra-thin movements for close to a century. From the Ultra-Thin Minute
Repeater 4261 in 1943, to the Calibre 1003 in 1955 which was just 1.64 mm thick and set the record for one the world’s thinnest handwound calibres. Then came the calibre 1120 In 1968, introduced with a height of just 2.45 mm, which still exists today and is the basis for calibres such as the 1120 QP found in the 2025 Ultra-Thin Perpetual Calendar. The calibre is the next step in the Ultra-Thin evolution.
Vacheron Constantin’s new self-winding ultra-thin movement is in the form of the Calibre 2550. Measuring just 2.4mm thick, it delivers an 80-hour power reserve and is the result of seven years of research and development focused on improving overall performance. The movement features an innovative architecture combining a micro-rotor, a suspended double barrel and a compact single-level gear train. Saying it like this sounds simple, but it is anything but.
To achieve the slimness of the calibre, Vacheron has integrated the micro-rotor directly into the mainplate. This saves precious height and allows the 950 platinum micro-rotor to wind in both directions to give the barrel the 80 hours of power reserve for the new Calibre 2550.
To ensure the 80-hour power reserve, Vacheron has used a suspended double-barreled system in the new movement. Their serial assembly means they are stacked one above the other in an inverted orientation. This makes it possible to remove one of the barrel covers, which in turn delivers space savings to keep the movement slim. This system isn’t just about thickness either. The two barrels are coupled to different parts of the movement, enhancing efficiency.

Because the winding torque is transmitted directly to the upper barrel, and the energy from the lower barrel heads directly to the finishing gear, the ratchet could also be eliminated. The system enhances torque stability, which in turn ensures a more accurate movement via less energy loss.
To accommodate the micro-rotor within the mainplate, alongside the suspended double barrel and the 3Hz balance, Vacheron Constantin had to completely rethink how the gear train was laid out within such a confined space, all while keeping it on a single level. As I’ve said before, slimming a watch movement down isn’t an easy process. The solution is a five-wheel gear train, with two wheels mounted on ball bearings. This improves efficiency while also adding to the movement’s overall durability.
As with all Vacheron movements, the Calibre 2550 is decorated beautifully, with Côtes de Genève on the bridges, which in turn are bevelled. The mainplate is circular-grained, which peers through from under the micro rotor, which displays a circular satin finish around its periphery, and an inner grained surface and a polished motif evoking a compass rose. The barrel case is snailed, and the wheels are sunburst-finished. It is one good-looking movement that complements the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin model.
“The quest for elegance and refinement — one of the fundamental principles guiding creation at Vacheron Constantin — informs the design of all its watches, not only those considered “dress watches”. Even when developing sports models, the objective remains to preserve balanced aesthetics and a strong sense of harmony in the treatment of shapes and volumes.”

A Full Platinum Overseas
This brings us to the watch itself that Vacheron Constantin has chosen to debut the Calibre 2550 in the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin, which, for the first time ever, is crafted in 950 platinum. And it is not the standard 950 platinum most brands use. Vacheron Constantin uses a rare combination of 5% copper and gallium. It is then put through a thermal hardening process, which gives it 2.7 times greater resistance than standard 950 platinum.

For this limited edition, Vacheron has given the watch a 39.5mm case size, which is a very slender 7.35mm thick. This is reduced from the white gold Ultra-Thin 2000V, which came in at 40mm by 7.5mm thick. This makes this watch the slimmest Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin to date. What also sets this apart is the salmon dial Vacheron has used. This dial colour is a throwback to several historical models from the 1940s, and more recently, the Traditionelle perpetual calendar introduced in 2022.
The dial features a salmon-lacquered finish with a sunburst satin-finished centre and a velvet-finished outer seconds track. Applied hour markers and the hours and minutes hands are crafted in 18K white gold, with both the markers and hands highlighted with blue Super-LumiNova® for enhanced legibility.

The Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin also comes with two additional straps, as is customary for the Overseas collection. For this, Vacheron has paired the new piece with a beige rubber strap and an additional dark beige alligator strap with a nubuck finish.

Initial Thoughts
It is hard to beleive that this is the first Overseas in platinum. With such an etensive catalogue, I was suprised that there wasn’t one already, but that is one grfeat aspect about Vacheron Constantin – the ability to surprise. The size will hit the mark too for many at 39.5mm and a slender 7.35mm thick. Integrated bracelet watches usually appear slightly larger on the wrist than the measurements on paper, so this will be in the sweet spot for many, me included. And then there’s the movement.
For a brand that has been making thin and ultra-thin movements in wrist watches for almost a century, making it better is a tall order. Evidently, Vacheron was up to the challenge. As Vacheron’s motto suggests, “Do better if possible, and that is always possible”. Yes, it seems it is. And this isn’t just a slightly refined version on the Calibre 1120, it’s a brand new architecture, seven years in the making.
All up, the new Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin is the next step in the Overseas journey. And the irony of that statement isn’t lost on me given the intended purpose of the Overseas collection when it was introduced in 1996. And I’m sure that there will be more to come…
