Bvlgari teams up with the legendary Vianney Halter for a new duet of Octo Finissimo models that look completely out of this world.
The future has taken many forms in design. Whether it’s the neon-soaked aesthetic of Cyberpunk, the art deco influence of Raygun Gothic, or the Cold War-esque attitudes of Atompunk, the conceptual future has seeped its way into every industry.
In the horological world, Bvlgari stands as one of the few brands to convey such an aesthetic through its Octo Finissimo. While it’s not overtly futuristic, the Italian-Swiss brand combines its Roman roots with brutalist minimalism for a sleek, almost Martian aesthetic. But before Bvlgari was making waves in the subgenre, an independent master watchmaker was making huge moves all the way back in the 1990s.
The watchmaker in question is Vianney Halter, who released the Antiqua back in 1998 with an extremely radical creative vision. But instead of the modernist look of Bvlgari, Halter was more partial to the steampunk aesthetic, with the Antiqua defining itself through a Victorian perspective on futuristic watchmaking.
So, with two diametrically opposed perspectives on conceptual futurism, there’s no way that the worlds of Vianney Halter and Bvlgari could possibly combine… right? Well, that’s exactly what happened during Geneva Watch Days 2026. The unpredictability of the watch world has brought them together, with both brand and watchmaker joining forces in what could possibly be the most unique combined take on haute horlogerie.
Thin Kings
The Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Dual Time x Vianney Halter, presented in two limited-edition runs, is the culmination of both parties’ interpretations of watchmaking. The 40.5mm frame comes in either titanium or 18k rose gold, which switches up the wrist presence significantly.
The lightweight titanium lends the watch a significantly sporty feel, while the 18k gold case’s density helps to add more impact to the wearability. Either way, the wearing experience remains similar to the original Octo Finissimo: broad on the wrist, yet tamed by the relatively slim 9.7mm thickness. Interestingly, that makes it among the thickest of the Octo Finissimo line, but it should still wear extremely well.
Available on a fully integrated titanium bracelet in titanium, or an alligator leather strap with the gold model, the new Bvlgari/Vianney Halter collaboration maintains the architectural silhouette of the Octo Finissimo collection. It’s undoubtedly a dress piece, coming in at 30m of water resistance, but a watch as disruptive as this is destined to be worn strictly for special occasions.
Steampunk’d
And speaking of special, no other watch in the world today looks quite like the design they have put together. While the silhouette is distinctively Bvlgari, Halter’s passion for the steampunk aesthetic truly shines through on the dial. Unlike the regular Octo Finissimo, these new watches don’t have a traditionally open dial.
Halter takes inspiration from the lines of his ever-iconic Antiqua, replacing the dial with four portholes surrounded by solid brushed metal. While it truly subscribes to the Victorian futurism that steampunk is known to offer, I’m always reminded of the Nautilus from Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. That novel isn’t traditionally steampunk, but instead helped inform the design language when the genre was later introduced. In a way, Vianney Halter does the same, maintaining the ambitious cues of his pioneering days.
In any case, each of the four portholes has its own purpose, finished in opaline rhodium with blued hands. The largest of the four is the top right, which has your regular hours and minutes indicated through a railroad minute track and Arabic numerals.
On its left arcs the date display, which flows downwards as the current date changes, shown through a static crescent moon hand. In the bottom left sits the GMT function, which helps to track a second time zone beyond the one shown in the top right. Finally, the last porthole is connected to the GMT function, showing whether or not it’s day or night in the destination of your choosing.
Micro Mastery
But for as stunning as the Bvlgari/Vianney Halter collaboration is, both still have an eye for exacting watchmaking. Within the open caseback runs the all-new Cal. BVF 200, which itself is built off the Cal. BVL 138 architecture. Similar to the Cal. BVL 138, the Cal. BVF 200 is an automatic micro-rotor movement with a steady 3Hz (21,600VpH) beat rate atop a respectable 60-hour power reserve.
However, the difference, perhaps obviously, is the added modules to support the asymmetric appearance and functions of Vianney Halter’s design. The time is adjusted solely through the crown, while the opposite pushers operate both the date and caller-style GMT functions respectively.
Something I didn’t immediately notice when I first checked out the movement was within the GMT porthole. Looking inside, the small seconds native to the Cal. BVL 138 was actually preserved, adding a further sense of practicality to what is otherwise a very unconventional timepiece.
Initial Thoughts
I love when watch designs and the brands that create them refuse to compromise on anything. There’s something to be said about committing to a dial layout, a complication, or an aesthetic that’s so truly unique. Even if it’s not everyone’s flavour, regardless of their opinion, it shows that the watch remains authentic to its initial conception.
No two better examples exist in that regard than the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo and the Vianney Halter Antiqua. To see them collide in such a manner is both highly exciting and extremely compelling, fusing the modernist, sleek architecture of the Italian design with Halter’s completely different flavour of sci-fi watchmaking. But the collision of worlds, as strange as it is, has only served to benefit both parties, resulting in a watch anyone and everyone can adore.
