The resurrected watchmaker L. Leroy continues its grand revival through Geneva Watch Days 2026 with the grand resurrection of a 19th-century icon.
The L. Leroy brand is one of the most prestigious watch brands you may never have heard of. Founded in the late 18th century, the Franco-Swiss brand distinguished itself through its exacting commitment to elegant timekeeping. Such a reputation had to be kept hush-hush in the early years, though, as founder Charles-Basile Le Roy went into hiding to avoid his royal associations during the French Revolution.
But that didn’t stop his legacy from being felt throughout the entire watchmaking world. Now back in the limelight, the modern L. Leroy looks to continue this legacy with haute horlogerie pieces inspired by this esteemed heritage. You may have already seen this with its grand reintroduction courtesy of the Osmior Bal du Temps, or the modern-thinking ELYOR flying tourbillon collection, but this new trio of releases takes on a completely different and avant-garde direction.
Take A Bow
For Geneva Watch Days 2026, L. Leroy has welcomed a new collection entitled Vox Temporis. Latin for “voice of time”, the approach of this watch was heralded all the way back in 2023 with a fully engraved piece unique at that year’s Only Watch exhibition. These watches are of a more simplistic character, drawing on the same drum-shaped case standing 43mm wide and 13.95mm thick, without the massive embellishments.
However, that doesn’t make them any less compelling, as each is offered in a different case material. Perhaps the dressiest of the three would be the classic 18k red gold reference, combining warmth, lustre and density into a single package. For more subtlety, the platinum case might be more your speed, or perhaps you go for the titanium reference instead.
It’s not meant to give it a more sporty feel, though the lighter weight does lend it that attribute, but titanium transmits and projects sound better than heavy precious metals. So if you want the purest sound from the minute repeater, this might be the one for you. Trust me: I’ve worn it, and it’s awesome.
All three L. Leroy Vox Temporis models come equipped with a black alligator leather strap, complete with a folding buckle and tang combo for maximum comfort. Though the 43mm case profile is broad, it’s a watch that still feels easy to wear even beyond special occasions. But with 30m of water resistance, its nature remains undoubtedly dressy.
Hitting The Bullseye
Said dressiness is only enhanced by the absolutely incredible dial. Each L. Leroy Vox Temporis is set on a finqué soleil guilloché backdrop, where a sunburst pattern is cut into the dial and layered with a translucent coating. Available in either black, blue or silver for the gold, platinum and titanium references respectively, the finishing provides the dial with an unparalleled level of light play. Each guilloché dial radiates outwards from the single element present on the dial: a hand-engraved arrow-shaped hour hand.
Few watches today subscribe to a single-hand functionality, with few exceptions like this one and MeisterSinger. However, the choice of a single hand is hardly superfluous, as L. Leroy takes from a historic watch created in 1810 for the Prince of Hesse. The hand-engraved arrow sports its own gorgeous finishing, and comes in either red gold, rhodium or a blue finish depending on the reference.
But when you take a closer look, you realise there is no central axis on the hour hand. So how does it tell the time? Well, it’s not the hand that rotates but the dial, pivoting ever so slowly to give a generalised, relaxed indicator of the hour. It’s for those who don’t have, want or need to worry about the exact minutes and seconds, allowing the user to enjoy their time with the watch rather than being controlled by it.
Hidden Mastery
But should you need to know the minutes, turning the watch around makes that all the easier. Within the sapphire crystal beats the brand’s manual-wind Cal. L601SQR, operating at a steady 3Hz (21,600VpH) atop a 90-hour power reserve. The appearance is highly refined but somewhat modest at first glance, which belies the true complexity within. What can be seen, however, are the two gongs that make up the minute repeater complication.
Actioning the slide at nine o’clock triggers the spectacle, ringing in the hours, quarters and minutes in that order. It’s a fitting complication for its Latin nomenclature, and provides that added sense of human interactivity. But it’s more than merely a novelty, as the watch remains deadly accurate thanks to the hidden flying tourbillon ticking away within the movement.
Initial Thoughts
Being boots-on-the-ground here at Geneva Watch Days has already allowed me to see more watches than I thought I would ever see in my entire life. I’ve been excited for L. Leroy ever since I heard about its return, though I never thought I would ever be able to see it with my own two eyes. And what a place to start!
The Vox Temporis, from personal experience, absolutely blew my mind. For as big and bold as the watch figures itself to be, it still manages to carry that unmistakable air of haute horlogerie excellence that can only be felt in the metal. Simple from a first look, but mind-bogglingly complex within, the L. Leroy Vox Temporis is certainly one of the highlights of my time here, and the entire exhibition in general. No wonder it’s already been nominated by the GPHG!
