The king of the watch industry is back once again! This year, Rolex has introduced a new version of the beloved Datejust 41 in green ombré lacquer.

2026 is a landmark year for the Crown. It marks the 100th anniversary of the Oyster Perpetual, the watch that truly started it all for Rolex. The Swiss-made, German-founded, British-born brand has been making significant strides in that regard; check out Sam’s article from yesterday on the celebratory Oyster Perpetual release. That said, it does not mean they are about to neglect one of their most popular models.

The new Rolex Datejust 41, now with a green lacquer ombré dial.

While the Oyster Perpetual will forever be the genesis of Rolex’s success, it is the humble Datejust that has claimed the most suitors. The simple addition of a date, a fluted bezel and, at times, a Jubilee bracelet has worked wonders in generating widespread appeal. So while this release might seem slightly more restrained compared to the fireworks surrounding its sibling, this new version of the Datejust is by no means any less compelling.

For Watches & Wonders 2026, Rolex offers a new look within the model line: a Datejust 41 presented in white Rolesor and fitted with a striking green lacquer ombré dial. Immediately recognisable yet distinct, this new version of the Datejust has been crafted with expressiveness and symbolism in mind.

An Oyster Flex

As is the case with most Rolex watches, the Datejust 41 comes in the brand’s proprietary Oyster case in Oystersteel. For those unfamiliar, this is a proprietary alloy that builds upon the already highly durable 904L stainless steel. With greater corrosion and scratch resistance, it is perfectly suited to handle the everyday rigours of life, a feature Rolex has built an empire on, alongside its 100m water resistance. Where the term ‘Rolesor’ comes in is in reference to the two-tone nature of the watch. While it may not appear so at first glance, the Datejust 41’s fluted bezel is crafted from 18ct white gold.

Sized at 41mm in case diameter with an 11.6mm thickness, it is a bold yet highly wearable timepiece. Comfort is further enhanced by the addition of Rolex’s classic three-link Oyster bracelet and clasp. The brand’s proprietary Easylink extension system is also included, allowing for a near-perfect fit regardless of conditions.

Ombré Noumade

The defining feature of the new Datejust 41, however, is its green lacquer ombré dial. The process is highly meticulous: a green lacquer is first applied to the dial base, followed by the careful spraying of black lacquer in concentric patterns to create a seamless gradient. The result is a dynamic transition from a vibrant green centre to a deep, almost inky periphery.

The layered lacquer feels especially fitting for the year’s celebrations. Green is the signature colour of Rolex, and this Datejust 41 may well become one of the brand’s more emblematic models. The design is elevated by 18ct white gold hour markers and baton hands, all filled with the familiar blue Chromalight lume. Framed by the iconic bezel, the watch is expressive without excess, and striking in any light.

Deadly Datejust Accuracy

The beating heart of the Rolex Datejust 41, while unchanged from its predecessors, still represents the pinnacle of modern watchmaking. Inside is the Calibre 3235, an automatic movement with a 4Hz (28,800VpH) beat rate and a 70-hour power reserve. It is impressively accurate on two fronts: first, through its COSC chronometer certification; and second, through Rolex’s own Superlative Chronometer certification, which tightens those already strict tolerances even further.

Rolex

This is largely due to Rolex’s continued innovation in movement technology. Within the Calibre 3235, the brand uses several proprietary components to achieve such performance. The blue Parachrom hairspring, made from a niobium, zirconium and oxygen alloy, enhances resistance to magnetic fields, while the Paraflex shock absorbers reduce deviations in accuracy caused by external impacts. Finally, the Chronergy escapement improves efficiency by reducing energy loss during operation.

Initial Thoughts

The spotlight may be on the Oyster Perpetual for its 100th birthday, but my attention drifts towards this new Datejust 41. Let’s be honest: it will not be readily available today, and perhaps not within the first six months, unless your surname is Wahlberg, Khaled or similar. Even so, Rolex once again demonstrates its mastery of subtle evolution. The green ombré lacquer dial breathes new life into a familiar face, introducing a design language once reserved for the very top end of Rolex’s catalogue.

At AU$19,600 at the time of writing, it is certainly a significant ask, but also a compelling one. This may well be one of the most Rolex-looking Rolexes ever made, which is saying something given how recognisable each of its timepieces already is. Beyond its aesthetics, the new Datejust 41 in green ombré lacquer stands as both a celebration of everything Rolex has achieved over the past century. Yet, it’s also a reminder of how incredible Rolex’s watchmaking is, was, and always will be.
