With the introduction of a new 38mm case size, the Tissot Gentlemen collection offers even greater versatility for every occasion!
Tissot’s Gentlemen collection has been one of success for the brand, offering elegant aesthetics at an affordable entry-level luxury price point. The line has become a go-to option for those wanting a versatile timepiece that can seamlessly transition from daily wear to more formal occasions.
The Gentlemen collection officially debuted in 2019, and it was positioned as a modern everyday mechanical watch in Tissot’s catalogue, sitting in that sweet spot between dressy elegance and everyday casual versatility. But this was exactly the intention of Tissot. The Gentlemen line was created to be an all-rounder, the “perfect everyday watch,” built to work across business, casual, and weekend settings rather than being locked into one use case.

The original Gentlemen collection was offered in a 40mm case size, which was ideally suited for the period in which the timepiece was released, as that size reflected broader late-2010s market preferences, giving the watch a contemporary stance while still aiming to remain refined and wearable. Another big part of the model’s appeal was its value. When it was launched, the collection combined Swiss-made construction, an automatic movement, 100 metres of water resistance, a sapphire crystal, and a polished case and bracelet, all at a relatively accessible price point.
Refined Proportions for Modern Life
Now, Tissot is giving the Gentlemen line a refresher by bringing a smaller, and in my opinion, more wearable 38mm case size. This new case size adds a lot more versatility to the collection, with the new 38mm size better catering to those with smaller wrists. And just like the original Gentlemen line’s release, it caters to a market that prefers models with smaller case sizes.
The surface of the case features a vertical satin-brushed finish, while the bezel has a mirror-like polished finish that gives the timepiece its luxury and elegant aesthetic. This mixture of finishes is then carried over to the three-link bracelet, with the outer links featuring vertical brushed finishing, while the central links feature a beautiful shine with polished surfaces. The contrast between the brushed and polished elements allows the watch to strike the perfect balance between sporty versatility and refined sophistication. It also adds more depth to the overall design, ensuring the Gentleman 38 has just the right amount of wrist presence without becoming overly flashy.
Dial Colours To Suit Every Style
Tissot is offering the new Gentlemen 38 collection in four different dial colours: silver, black, dark blue, and lastly, dark green. Each colour presents a distinct personality of the timepiece, giving the collection a strong sense of versatility depending on the wearer’s taste and style. The silver dial offers the most classic and timeless look of the lineup, while the black model leans into understated elegance with a slightly more formal feel, perfect for those special events and nights out.

Personally, I love the dark blue, but what really stands out for me is the dark green model. The way the sunburst effect changes the tones of green under light makes this colour stand out much more than the other colours. It feels a little more dynamic and expressive, yet still refined enough to suit the Gentleman collection perfectly. This is a dial colour that brings a fresh energy to the collection, while still maintaining the elegant design language that defines the line.
The dial also features a pyramidal shape, which is subtle in its appearance but reveals itself beautifully under the right lighting angles. This textured finish certainly adds another layer of depth to the dial, allowing it to feel more visually engaging without taking away from the clean and refined layout. Combined with the applied hands and applied hour markers, both with polished finishing, it gives the watches a premium feel, which elevates it beyong the entry-level luxury positioning.
Reliable Performance Through The Powermatic 80
At the heart of this new Gentlemen 38mm collection lies Tissot’s Powermatic 80 automatic movement. The use of this movement provides a significant advantage for daily wearers, frequent travellers, or those who may regularly rotate between multiple timepieces, as you can leave the watch off the wrist for a couple of days and still come back to it with a beating heart. The movement suits the Gentlemen collection perfectly, reinforcing the watch’s role as a versatile everyday companion designed for modern lifestyles.
Its not just the power reserve that makes this movement worthy. The Powermatic 80 is also fitted with a Nivachron™ balance spring, which has been engineered to improve resistance against magnetic fields, shocks, and temperature variations. These technical additions to the movement help to ensure that it stays accurate throughout the time that it’s on the wrist, making the Gentlemen 38 more than just looks.
Initial Thoughts
I was fortunate enough to attend the launch event of this new Gentlemen 38 collection in Sydney, in the iconic Victor Churchill restaurant. There were quite a few different faces present at the event, from all varying fields, coming together to celebrate what Tissot has to offer. It was certainly a memorable night, not only getting to see the new collection up close, but also witnessing everyone’s reactions to the new size.
What stood out most was just how positively the 38mm case was received. While the Gentleman collection has already proven itself to be a strong offering within Tissot’s lineup, this new size feels like a natural evolution of the model. It brings a slightly more refined, versatile presence to the wrist, which only adds to the collection’s appeal as an everyday timepiece that suits a wide range of wearers.
Being able to experience the watches up close and personal also gave a true visual impression of what the timepieces are actually like. While press and online images do give a perspective on what the watch looks like, it’s not quite the same as having it on your wrist and seeing the case beautifully shine as the light hits it from different angles. This is also why I prefer the green dial in this new collection, as to me, it really did stand out for stunning sunburst finishing.
Overall, this new Gentlemen 38 collection feels like a natural evolution of the line, with the more compact sizing giving the watch a refined and timeless presence, while still keeping the versatility and elegant styling that has made the Gentleman collection such a strong offering for Tissot!
