The Cherry Blossoms are blooming in Japan, so we’re celebrating with our selection of pink dial watches, and this Grand Seiko “Shunbun” is quite literally designed for the season.

When it comes Japanese nature inspired timepieces You know there is 1. brand that sure to deliver when it comes to artistic dials. in the case of charity blossom season as we are covering for Watch Advice this week there is 1. Time piece that is quite literally perfect for this occasion. The Grand seiko SBGA413 is “inspired by hana-ikada, a scene in which cherry blossoms in full bloom float along a river around the time of the spring equinox.”

The Grand seiko SBGA413 I wasn’t given the nickname “Shunbun”, which is actually a reference to the Japanese term for the Spring equinox, which is part of the traditional 24 seasonal phases of the Japanese calendar. the spring equinox He is also a national holiday in Japan which is held around March 20 or 21st marking the official start of the agricultural season. This is a day Day and night are almost nearly equal in length, And it is a holiday focused on welcoming spring which often coincides with the early blue of cherry blossoms.

Grand Seiko Shunbun

Grand Soaker then took this a step further and created the dial which is inspired by Hana-ikada, a poetic scene where cherry blossom petals float along rivers after falling from trees. this is reflected beautifully in the dial Where the surface has a pale sakura pink colour and a subtle textured Finish that resembles cherry blossom petals on the water surface.

The dial perfectly captures the Japanese concept of ‘mono no aware’, which is the appreciation of the fleeting nature of beauty. Grand Seiko are all too familiar when it comes to creating studying dials inspired by Beauty in nature, with previous editions including Pink Snowflake (Ref. SBGA497), White Birch (Ref. SLGH005), Mt Iwate (Ref. SLGH027G) and the gorgeous Lake Luwa (Ref. SLGA007), just to name a few!

Case Design

The dial on the Grand Seiko “Shunbun” isn’t the only stunning design element in its arsenal. The case is a reinterpretation of the iconic Grand Seiko 62GS, the brand’s first automatic mechanical watch, which debuted in 1967. There are a few different elements that make this case design quite unique. One of the most distinctive features is its bezel-less design, where the glass is directly fixed to the case body. This particular design choice reduces the overall visual thickness of the watch while also allowing light to refract from multiple angles.

Another unique design feature of the case is its side profile, which transitions seamlessly into the lugs. The side profile features multiple faceted angles, giving the case a distinctive architectural look. These various surfaces are also finished differently: the top surface of the case has a vertical brushed finish, while the faceted angles are beautifully polished. This is then complemented by horizontal brushing along the side profile of the case.

This 40mm case, measuring 12.8mm thick with a lug-to-lug distance of 47.0mm, is made from high-intensity titanium, which is around 30% lighter than stainless steel while also offering superior scratch and corrosion resistance. The result is a much lighter and more comfortable wearing experience. The case design ensures that it sits comfortably on the wrist all day long, while complementing the dial aesthetics with its own distinctive design.

Dial Design

As mentioned before, the inspiration behind the dial comes from Hana-ikada. The light pink tone of the dial is inspired by Sakura blossoms, while the textured pattern is specifically designed to evoke the image of cherry blossom petals floating across the water. Due to the nature of the textured finishing, the dial can display different shades of pink depending on the lighting source and viewing angles. It has often been said that the dial can appear silver in bright light, while turning a soft pink indoors, and even taking on champagne or rose gold tones at certain angles.

The dial features a date window that is beautifully integrated by replacing the 3 o’clock hour marker, creating a more cohesive design. Between the 7 and 8 o’clock hour indices is also a power reserve indicator, helpful for easily keeping track of the watch’s remaining power. The applied indices and razor-sharp dauphine hands feature mirror polishing, which complements the case finishing while also enhancing the overall luxury appeal of the timepiece.

Movement

Sitting inside the Grand Seiko ‘Shunbun’ is the Spring Drive Calibre 9R65 movement. Offering a respectable power reserve of 72 hours, with an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds a month (+/- 1 Second a day), the Spring Drive Calibre 9R65 is Grand Seiko’s unique hybrid movement that combines traditional mechanical watchmaking with quartz-level precision, while delivering the brand’s signature smooth sweeping seconds hand.

Initial Thoughts

For Watch Advice’s Cherry Blossom week, I couldn’t think of a more perfect feature than this Grand Seiko SBGA413 ‘Shunbun’ edition. Inspired by Japan’s Spring equinox, the designers at Grand Seiko HQ, have not only taken the imagery of Cherry Blossoms, but given it the beautiful setting of hana-ikada,in which the petals float along the river. This timepiece is widely considered as one of the best value for money watches from the brand!

What makes it’s special is not just the gorgeous dial, but also the unique case design, inspired by the original 62GS. This case is a singature design in Grand Seiko’s Heritage collection, featuring a bezel-less construction that allows more light to reach the dial while showcasing the brand’s renowned Zaratsu polishing.

Paired with Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive Calibre 9R65 movement and crafted from lightweight high-intensity titanium, this timepiece excels in all areas! From the finishing off the case, the wearability, use of lightweight materials, the stunning dial design to a highly accurate movement, the Grand Seiko “Shunbun” is a beautifully balanced watch that truly captures the essence of the cherry blossom season.

While Grand Seiko has unveiled another cherry blossom inspired timepiece more recently, named “Sakura-Kakushi” (SBGH341), the “Shunbun” still remains as the personal favourite. The newer model draws inspiration from a rare early spring scne where cherry blossoms are partially hidden beneath the fresh snowfall, a phenomenon which is referred to as “sakura-kakushi”. However, I personally still gravitate toward the Shunbun, as having both a power reserve indicator and date window adds a layer of practicality to its already stunning design.
