With the final season of The Boys looming, it just felt right! Check out these timepieces worn by Antony Starr, the man behind the menacing role of Homelander.

One of my favourite TV shows, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, is finally coming to an end. After five seasons, a sidequel, and several spinoffs, the iconic series looks to close off with a bombastic finale.

To commemorate this occasion, I’ve elected to put out a Celebrity Watch Spotting double feature for the show’s two leading stars. Funnily enough, it’s a lot closer to home than you think; For a show that’s all about superheroes, gratuitous violence, and Onion-esque satire about Americana, the two ‘big dogs’ of The Boys are both from our next-door-neighbour, New Zealand!

Today, the Kiwi in question is none other than Antony Starr. A Wellington native, Starr began his career with minor roles, such as those in Xena: Warrior Princess and 2004’s In My Father’s Den.

His major breaks would come not long after, garnering several awards for his twin role in Outrageous Fortune. From 2013-2016, he would become more renowned for his role as John Smith/Lucas Hood in Banshee, which since his rise to stardom has garnered a cult following.

But of course, Starr’s crowning television role would see him play Homelander in The Boys. Capturing the fractured mental state of the so-called ‘superhero,’ Starr’s acting has led to him gathering several Critic’s Choice Awards. Such is Homelander’s popularity that there’s even global appeal for Starr’s nomination – or selection – of an Emmy Award before the show concludes.

Though Watch Advice has no sway in that regard, we’re well within our authority to critique the watch collection of this remarkable actor. Well, provided he doesn’t laser us to death for it! With that being said, prepare to be surprised by Antony Starr’s five favourite timepieces.

Casio G-SHOCK FULL METAL 2100 Series

For an accomplished actor like Antony Starr, it’s a little surprising that his collection opens with an accessible brand like Casio. Don’t get me wrong—the watch of choice here is one of the Japanese brand’s premier offerings. However, it’s certainly the easiest to get out of all the watches featured on this list.

In any case, the watch on Starr’s wrist is the Casio G-SHOCK Full Metal GM-B2100. With an octagonal case spanning 44.4mm in width, Casio’s 2100 series bears a striking resemblance to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. It hasn’t gone unnoticed in the watch world, and has been affectionately nicknamed the ‘CasiOak’ since its 2019 launch. Since then, it’s become one of the most iconic timepieces of the last 25 years.

The Full Metal rendition of the CasiOak takes that familiar design and turns it up a notch. As the name suggests, the Full Metal series is encased in stainless steel, giving the watch a distinct weight and presence, all while maintaining the protective properties that come standard with the Casio G-SHOCK range.

But we get it: the CasiOak isn’t a one-for-one replacement for the iconic Royal Oak. However, it can do everything a Royal Oak does and more. Not only does it tell the time via solar power, but it also features a 38-city world timer, a 1/100th-second stopwatch, a countdown timer, five alarms, and even an on-demand LED. It really does everything you could ask of it — and looks good doing it.

Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix Day-Date

Though the Casio G-SHOCK is the star of his affordable pieces, the rest of his watch box is significantly less so. If you’re going to be making appearances at some of the world’s biggest awards ceremonies, you’ve got to wear a watch fit for the occasion. That being said, where better for Antony Starr to turn than Vacheron Constantin?

For his 2025 appearance at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, Starr was photographed wearing the Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix Day-Date. Available in either stainless steel or pink gold, the 40 mm Fiftysix line is typically referred to as the entry point for Vacheron Constantin enthusiasts. However, this Day-Date rendition is offered in the latter, complete with several complications that elevate it significantly.

This is evident in the addition of two sub-dial registers, one for the day and the other for the date. The Fiftysix Day-Date also features a power reserve complication at six o’clock. Though the Calibre 2475 SC/2 is automatic, it’s useful to keep track of the 40-hour power reserve should you set it down between ceremonies. Don’t expect it to lose time, either, as every Vacheron Constantin movement carries the Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal), denoting the watch’s chronometric accuracy and Genevan origin.

Gerald Charles Maestro 8.0 Squelette

Between the Casio and Vacheron Constantin, Antony Starr already has quite the diverse watch collection. However, this addition takes him from watch enthusiast to full-blown watch nerd. Not many people have heard of the Gerald Charles brand, but leave it to Starr to collect one of their remarkable timepieces.

In a model shoot for Deadline, Starr can be seen wearing the Maestro 8.0 Squelette from the independent brand. If the name rings a bell, your instincts are spot-on: this is one of two brands founded by the legendary designer Gerald Genta.

Known for iconic models like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus, Genta spent the twilight of his career as head designer of Gerald Charles. Though he tragically passed in 2011, his legacy lives on through his designs, Gerald Charles, and his eponymous company now owned by LVMH.

At a universally wearable 39mm, Starr’s 8.0 Squelette is a contemporary take on Genta’s Maestro silhouette. A slim 8.35mm thick, the contemporary lines of the watch are enhanced by the skeletonisation of the dial. Stripping away the dial, plates, and bridges, all superfluous detail is removed from the watch, permitting an unprecedented view of the movement. And when that movement is the in-house Calibre 8.0 micro-rotor, you’d hope everyone gets to see it; it’s an absolute looker!

Tudor Black Bay Chrono Pink

For as practical as the G-Shock is, Antony Starr has already shown his inclination towards mechanical watches through his Vacheron Constantin and Gerald Charles pieces. Even then, he has yet to pick a more practical mechanical timepiece than either of those two. In this photoshoot for GQ, however, he shows that not all of his watches are purely for show, opting instead for a Tudor Black Bay Chrono.

Standing at 41mm in case diameter, the Tudor Black Bay Chrono’s strong silhouette is second only to that of a G-Shock. However, there is a distinct difference in wrist presence, both in the case and bracelet. This is largely due to the added weight of a mechanical movement, but the slab sides exacerbate the watch’s 14.4mm thickness, something that carries across other 41mm Black Bay models, like my own Black Bay GMT Opaline.

The Tudor Black Bay Chrono is a tough watch with equally robust specifications, complete with 200m of water resistance and COSC chronometer certification. Leave it to Starr, though, to pick one of the rarer versions. Upon closer inspection, you’ll find that he’s wearing the pink dial rendition.

Due to extremely low production numbers, along with the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation’s penchant for bottlenecking distribution, it’s very rare to see one of these in the wild. Funnily enough, the only other person I’ve known to frequently wear the same watch is yet another Kiwi superstar: Formula One Driver Liam Lawson. I suppose Starr either used his celebrity charm, or that piercing Homelander glare, to secure one for himself.

Hublot Classic Fusion Titanium Black 42mm

But with distinct sport, dress, tool, and flex pieces all finding their place in Antony Starr’s collection, is there a possibility for an in-between? In the watch world, I’ve learned that almost anything is possible. So when Starr dressed up for the Saturn Awards last year, where he won Best Supporting Actor, and needed a timepiece that fused all four, he turned to the Classic Fusion collection from Hublot.

Image: Benjamin Holtrup

Initially conceived by Carlo Crocco in the 1980s, the Hublot Classic Fusion collection helped redefine the modern watchmaking landscape. By combining typically luxurious case materials with sportier rubber components, Hublot bridged the gap between elegance and versatility.

As far as Hublot’s watchmaking extremes go, the Classic Fusion is the purest distillation of its overall ethos. Encased in a 42mm titanium frame, this particular reference pairs an alligator leather strap with a rubber inner for added comfort and flexibility.

With a black dial and faceted indexes, it’s about as minimalistic as a Hublot can get. For an occasion as star-studded as the Saturn Awards, it’s an easy watch to wear, balancing cool factor with dressy flair. In Starr’s case, it looks especially sharp with his Valentino suit.

Watch Advice Suggests:

Arnold & Son Ultra Thin Tourbillon Red Gold

With that being said, it’s time for some watch advice for Mr Starr. When I was going through the watches he wears, I was pleasantly surprised by how much variety he has. While brands like Tudor, Hublot and Casio sit comfortably within the mainstream, Antony Starr isn’t afraid to step slightly off the beaten path.

Sure, Vacheron Constantin isn’t far removed from that mainstream, yet Starr opted for an often-overlooked version of the Fiftysix. On top of that, choosing a Gerald Charles is something you rarely see at this level of celebrity.

All of this leads me to one conclusion: Antony Starr is a watch nerd, or at least enthusiastic enough to venture beyond the usual comfort zones. So what do you suggest for someone who isn’t afraid to get a little adventurous with his timepieces? I initially thought of MB&F, which I do think he’d appreciate. However, I don’t want to send him too far down the rabbit hole on the first go. Instead, I’ve landed on the Arnold & Son Ultra Thin Tourbillon in red gold!

Bridging the gap between abstract haute horlogerie and traditional lines, the Ultra Thin Tourbillon from Arnold & Son would make a strong addition to his watch box. With an off-centre dial at twelve o’clock and a flying tourbillon beneath it, it ticks boxes that Starr has yet to explore in his collection. It’s understated enough to fly under the radar, yet hypnotic up close. Much like his magnetic performances in G20 and The Boys, the Ultra Thin Tourbillon is the kind of watch that draws you in and keeps you there.
