Breitling and football star, Erling Haaland, team up to create two new Chronomats with the brand’s first-ever meteorite dial!
For those not a fan of football, or soccer, depending on where you are in the world, Erling Haaland has become a household name for those who follow the beautiful game. For Manchester City fans, this is especially so. The young Norwegian footballer blasted onto the scene at just age 15 in Norway, before moving into the European league, getting a start at German team, Borussia Dortmund, where he won the Bundesliga Player of the Season at 19 years old. In 2022, Erling joined the famed British club, Manchester City, where in his debut season for them, he netted 36 goals, setting a new single-season record and earning both the Young Player and Player of the Season awards. He also secured the Golden Boot, European Golden Shoe, and Gerd Müller Trophy that year. His list of achievements goes on, so it isn’t hard to see why Breitling has formed a partnership with the young footballer, and while this isn’t their first outing together, what they have created together is a first for Breitling.

The Breitling Chronomat Eerling Haaland editions feature two new Chronomats: a 40mm steel and platinum GMT model and a 42mm 18k rose gold chronograph model. Both are limited editions, and both feature a new Meteorite dial that is a first for the Swiss Brand. And they look good!
From The Cosmos To Earth
For the dials of the limited edition Chronomats, Breitling has used fragments of the Muonionalusta meteorite – a 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite which is one of the most famous and oldest iron meteorites ever found. It was discovered in 1906, but crashed to Earth sometime around 800,000 – 1,000,000 years ago between what is now Sweden and Finland. Due to the rock’s composition, when it is cut and acid-washed, it displays what is known as Widmanstätten patterns – a crosshatched crystalline structure unique to iron meteorites. The effect on a watch dial as a result is stunning, and one reason Breitling and Eerling Haaland have chosen to use this for the dials of the two new pieces.

Haaland was deeply involved in the design process, from selecting the model to choosing the cosmic dial and the metals for the case. “I wanted something unique,” says Haaland. “With the Chronomat, it just clicked. It’s straightforward, entirely in metal or with a rubber strap—thanks to the dial, you’ll never see the same watch on someone else’s wrist.”
40mm Steel & Platinum GMT
The first is a 40mm GMT Chronomat that is done in steel and platinum. The case and Rouleux bracelet are made from steel, and the bezel is platinum, which encircles the meteorite dial, which has been cut from the ancient Muonionalusta meteorite. The Breitling logo and GMT hands are Rose Gold, which provides a bit of contrast to the silver/grey meteorite dial. Haaland’s initials provide the counterweight to the Rose Gold seconds hand, which is a nice touch that is fairly unobtrusive.
On the caseback, you will find a motif of Erling Haaland sitting in a meditative pose his signature goal celebration, and engraved around the edge – his shirt number for Manchester City – 9, along with “One of 500” signifying the limited edition of the watch. Under this beats the Calibre 32 GMT movement, based off the ETA 2893-2 GMT movement. Beating at 4Hz / 28,800 VpH, COSC certified and equiped with a 42hr power reserve, it won’t win awards, but will keep the watch in time nicely and for a long while at that – it is a workhorse movement!
The Chronomat GMT has the option of being bought on the steel Rouleaux bracelet or the Rouleaux style rubber strap, which allows you to give the watch a different look. Or, if you are like me, then buy the bracelet and opt to get the additional strap so you can change when you want to.

42mm Rose Gold Chronograph
The second, and my personal pick from the two pieces, is the 42mm Chronomat Chronograph in 18k Rose Gold limited to 250 pieces. With all the style cues of the standard Chronomat Chronograph, to me, it is a standout thanks to the colours that Breitling and Erling Haaland have chosen for the dial. The same colour meteorite dial as the GMT is somewhat transformed thanks to the contrasting black circular grained sub-dials and rose gold indices and hands. The black outer Tachymetre track provides a barrier between the silvery-grey dial and the rose gold bezel, which to me works well as it allows each of the case elements to shine.
Inside the Chronomat Chronograph is the in-house Calibre B01 chronograph movement. I’ve spoken previously about the in-house capabilities of Brietling, and this is the movement that kicked it all off for them. As such, the caseback on this model is see-through to show off the B01 Calibre, which is finished rather well thanks to the Côtes de Genéve on the bridges and the 18k gold rotor. Having a 70-hour power reserve, it beats away at 4Hz and is COSC like all Breitling movements.
Breitling has also produced five special editions of this model, just for Erling Haaland himself and his close circle, indicated by the “One of 5” and his lotus pose motif laser etched into the sapphire case back. On the side of the case, ERLING HAALAND 9 is etched as a tribute. This would be an amazing collector’s piece for those football, Man City and Erling Haaland fans, but these five watches have only been made for the player and his friends, and not for sale.

Initial Thoughts
Breitling designed the Chronomat back in 1983 to be an everyday wearing sports watch, and to combat the quartz crisis, so it does sometimes fall between the cracks of the iconic Navitimer and SuperOcean collections. It isn’t the Chronomat’s fault, though; it is hard to compete with iconic watch models, especially when those models are so strong. So it is nice that Breitling and Erling Haaland have chosen this collection for the new collaboration, and of course the first meteorite dial.
Having seen these pieces in person, I can say that these are good-looking watches. The GMT is subtle and understated from a distance, but up close, the meteorite dial shines through. I would have liked to have seen a little more contrast on the dial, however, but that is a matter of personal taste. The black rubber Rouleaux strap gives it this, and my preference would be to wear it on this, not to mention the rubber in extremely comfy.
On the other hand, the 18k rose gold B01 Chronomat is a standout, and Breitling has got this piece just right. Regardless of whether you like the Chonomat or not, the combination of the silver-grey dial, dark subdials and rose gold accents works incredibly well, and pair this with the rose gold case and rubber strap option, and you have a winner in my mind.
