Oris x Momotaro Special Edition

by Sameera Gamage

Oris has teamed up with the independent Japenese company Momotaro Jeans to produce the special edition timepiece; Oris X Momotaro. Momotaro launched in 2006 by Mr Hisao Manable, produces high-quality jeans worn by very style-savvy people around the world. The Momotaro companies roots lie in MR Manable’s textile company, which he founded in 1992 with only just three employees.

MR Manable’s vision has been clear from the get-go; don’t compromise on the quality of the product. He wanted to set the new international standard for denim, by only using the finest long-staple cotton, deep indigo rope dye for the best fade and using vintage shuttle looms in the workshops to create a hand-made feel to the denim. All this comes together to achieve a high-quality hand made product.

The partnership with Momotaro Jeans sits perfectly with Oris’s ideologies and vision. The Swiss watch brand prides itself in making watches with traditional hand craftmanship alongside precision manufacturing, to produce high-quality, beautiful timepieces. This shared spirit between the two companies is what has brought the Oris X Momotaro to life.

Oris x Momotaro

The Oris X Momotaro is a steel and bronze variation of Oris’s iconic Divers Sixty-Five model. It features a 40mm multi-piece stainless steel case and a uni-directional black bezel with a bronze edge. The dial is a beautiful gradient green which has contrasting bronze hour indexes and hands. Even though the centre of the dial is a lighter green due to the gradient variation, the hour indexes and hands can still be quite easily seen as the bronze really stands out.

The collaboration with Momotaro Jeans can be seen on the watch strap, which is an indigo Momotaro denim that has two white “battle stripes” on one band and comes with a stainless steel buckle. Momotaro’s battle stripes are there more than just for show, as the stripes are used as a “hard-won quality symbol”. The Momotaro denim strap certainly adds to the watches visual appeal as it matches nicely with the black bezel as well.

The movement inside the Oris X Momotaro is the brands 744 calibre. The Oris 733 movement powers the watch’s hours, seconds and minute hands while also featuring a stop-second function. The automatic movement comes with approximately 38 hours of power reserve and has a water resistance of 100m (10 bar). On the case back of the watch, the partnership between the two brands can be seen with the inscription “ORIS X MOMOTARO” along with Oris’s logo.

Oris x Momotaro

Oris and Momotaro jeans are a great match as both independent companies obsess and refuse to create anything other than high-quality products. “Made by hand without compromise”, the Oris X Momotaro is a perfect mixture of the vision of the two brands.
