Zenith Defy High Jewellery Series

by Chamath Gamage

Zenith has revamped the Defy El Primero 21 and the Defy Classic models by bringing out high jewellery editions for both these watches, just in time for the holiday season! The brand have released two high jewelled variations of both the Defy Classic and the Defy El Primero 21.

Zenith’s Defy El Primero 21 is already well known as a statement of what the brand is capable of, with its unrivalled 100th of the second chronograph movement. Not only that but the sheer beauty of the Defy El Primero 21 is something to be admired, especially with its open work dial.

Needless to say, the Defy El Primero 21 already is a masterpiece by Zenith, who have opted to push the boundaries even further by giving the model a diamond look. The first model of the Defy El Primero 21 in the High Jewellery series sees the watch done in a rose gold case which is entirely set with brilliant cut white diamonds. The bezel has baguette cut sapphires, which itself is a great move by Zenith to make the bezel stand out and not blend in with the diamonds on the casing itself. The artistic open work dial of the Defy El Primero 21 has been left alone with only the hands and hour index markers given a gold plated finish to match that of the case. Overall a more luxurious look is achieved with the addition of the diamonds and the rose gold finishes on the Defy El Primero 21.

The second variation of the Defy El Primero 21 sees the watch have a more festive approach to the design and layout of the diamonds. This variation also comes with a rose gold casing, however this time white diamonds of varying sizes have been placed on the case in random positions in a technique that is known as a “snow setting”. Where this version of the Defy El Primero 21 High Jewellery edition really stands out is the bezel, in which it gets a “rainbow” treatment with the sapphires. 44 baguette-cut sapphires are arranged beautifully around the bezel in a progressive colour scheme that resembles the entire light spectrum. The hour indexes also get sapphires added onto them, closely matching the colour scheme of the bezel. The rainbow effect that is achieved through the sapphires on the bezel and indexes on the dial really is something that makes the already beautiful Defy El Primero 21 stand out so much more.

The Defy Classic is another open-work dial released by Zenith in their revolutionary Defy range of models. The Defy Classic has a much simpler look compared to the other models in Zeniths Defy range as it does not include a chronograph function. What it lacks with the chronograph though, it more than makes up for with the intricate open work dial, which includes a start-shaped pattern forged above the movement as a way of representing the brands iconic star.

For the High Jewellery series, the first edition of the Defy Classic has the titanium case set with brilliant cut-diamonds, with baguette style diamonds on the bezel. Everything else has been left as is on the watch, including the hour indexes to the blue touches on the dial.

The second variation of the Defy Classic High Jewellery follows the same path as the Defy El Primero 21 in which it has been given a rainbow effect with the sapphires. The case has brilliant white diamonds finished in the same layout as the first Defy Classic High Jewellery edition. The bezel is where the watch really comes to life with colour, as it gets given 48 unique baguette cut sapphires arranged by colour graduation. To make the bezel the centrepiece of this Defy Classic High Jewellery edition, the dial has been given a white backdrop. The star shaped pattern has a white finish, with the minute track also given a more Grey look rather than the blue from the original. The effect of this is that the snow flake style dial has been given a brilliant colour finish with the rainbow sapphire bezel.
