IWC Adds To Their Colours Of Top Gun Collection With Two New Pieces

by Matt Clymo

IWC have continued their mission with Ceramic by adding two new pieces to their Colours of Top Gun Collection – a Pilot’s Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert edition and an all new Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland model.

Just like the pilots that these watches are designed for, IWC in somewhat of a stealth mission launched two new Colours Of Top Gun watches this week that (almost) slipped under the radar. However some keen watch enthusiasts were onto this quickly re-sharing IWC’s drops across socials and online. Added to the already impressive collection are two new models: The Pilots Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert and the Pilots Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland edition.

Pilots Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert

By now if you’re an IWC fan, or just a watch lover in general, you would be well aware of the Mojave Desert Colours of Top Gun watches, especially those seen on F1 driver, Lewis Hamilton’s wrist. The 41mm Pilots Chronographs are iconic in the IWC hangers, and when they released the new Colours Of TOP GUN at last year’s Watches & Wonders, they were an instant hit. The Mojave Desert Big Pilot and Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar were the first two pieces to get the Desert coloured treatment, so it makes sense that this colourway extends to the Pilot Chronograph 41.

The IWC Mojave Desert TOP GUN Lineup

If this was a black watch, it would be ‘blacked out’, but in this instance, it’s ‘browned out’ with the light tan ceramic case and strap blending nicely with the brown dial and light tan and brown hands and markers – perfect for desert manoeuvres or just going into battle with every day life!

Unlike the larger 44.5mm Lake Tahoe and Woodland Pilot’s Chronographs, this one comes in at a more slender 41.9mm like the Ceratanium model, and complete with 100m water resistance and stainless steel back with the TOP GUN logo on it.

Caseback of the Pilot Chrono Mojave Desert

Like the previous 41mm models, the new Pilot Chronograph Mojave Desert is powered by IWC’s manufacture 69380 calibre movement. The engineers and designers at IWC have put more focus on designing this movement to be more robust, reliable and durable. The 69380 calibre movement beats at 4hz or 28,800 VpH and delivers a power reserve of 46 hours.

The second model is the new Pilots Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland. This adds a second colour variant to the Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium and like the Woodland Pilot Chronograph, comes in a that beautiful ceramic that takes its name from the large forest areas TOP GUN pilots often find themselves flying over.

The TOP GUN Woodland models – Timezoner and Pilots Chronograph

Based on the Big Pilot, the new Timezoner Woodland is 46mm in size and 15mm thick, which is on the larger side. But this is a functional pilots watch with a world time, so the functionality here is the primary reason for this – designed so pilots can easily see the time and time zone at a glance and the large onion crown is there for ease of use with pilots gloves on.

The case back ring and the crown are made of Ceratanium®, which was designed to combine the structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch resistance similar to ceramic. The patented Timezoner® function allows the wearer to set the watch to a different time zone by pressing down and turning the rotating bezel, meaning less opportunity for it to be knocked and display the wrong time.

The movement is IWC’s 82760 Calibre which is an Automatic, self-winding movement with 60 hours Power Reserve beating at 4Hz or 28,800 VpH. The movement is on full display via the see through sapphire crystal case back and displays the 18k gold IWC medallion in the rotor delivering the power.

Final Thoughts

Whilst both models are not new for IWC, they do add another colour option in both models for people to consider. It also shows that IWC is continuing with their coloured ceramic, which in all honesty is great as it’s something different from the standard steel sports models that are out there. And for those of us that love to feel like they’ve a little bit of Lt Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in them, then these may just be the watches you’re looking for!
