Watch spotting: 65th Annual Grammy Awards

by Chamath Gamage

The 65th Annual Grammy Awards will certainly be remembered as a historic one, with one artist in particular, Beyonce, setting a record for most career wins by any artist. The star-powered grammy ceremony that took place in the Los Angeles arena returned to full action this year after the previous two years were disrupted and delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Annual Grammy Awards brought together the world of music, glitz, competition, and of course, our favourite; watches. With plenty of celebrities on the show, we have picked out a handful that donned some amazing timepieces.

Kendrick Lamar – Rolex Oyster Perpetual Stainless Steel Turquoise 41mm (Ref – 124300)

Kendrick Lamar stepped into the winner’s circle this year by collecting the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album with Mr Morale & the Big Steppers. The rapper was given the award by Cardi B and beat fellow nominees Pusha T, Jack Harlow, Future, and Dj Khaled. As he was giving his acceptance speech, what was so noticeable (for us watch aficionados anyway) was his Rolex Oyster Perpetual Stainless Steel Turquoise 41mm. Now a discontinued model, it certainly stood out from some distance and also happened to nicely match the colour tones on his jacket too. The particular Rolex model was valued at retail at 6,370 USD and carried a second-hand market value of approximately USD 25,650.

Jay Z – Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime (Ref 6300G-001)

Jay Z made an appearance on stage tonight for the very first time since 2014 to perform his much-talked-about verse in DJ Khaled’s “God Did” Grammy-nominated track. He was also there to support his wife, Beyonce, while she was making history at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

On the wrist, Jay Z can be seen wearing the beautiful black dial Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime. This timepiece is certainly a show-stopper. Arguably the most complicated timepiece in Patek Philippe’s collection, it brings together a sense of accomplishment and elegance, two things that Jay Z can certainly be attributed to. The Grandmaster Chime is a double-faced reversible watch that has up to 20 complications! The Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime retails for approximately a 2.2million USD, with an estimated market value of 7.0 million USD.

Trevor Noah – Patek Philippe Nautilus 18k Rose Gold (Ref. 2723/1R-001)

The three-time host and comedian Trevor Noah opened the proceedings for the 2023 Annual Grammy Awards. He was certainly up to the task as he took the time to make light-hearted fun of the stars in the room while also being a potential matchmaker for Adele and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. We’ll have to see how that one turns out!

Accompanying Trevor on stage was his Patek Philippe Nautilus 18k Rose Gold. This hard-to-find timepiece features baguette diamonds around the bezel while also having diamonds on the hour indices. This simple three-hander timepiece also features a date window at the 3 o’clock position. The watch retailed at 182,500 USD with a market value now of approximately 446,000 USD.

Pharrell Williams – Richard Mille RM 88 Smiley Tourbillon

While Pharrell Williams didn’t pick up any awards during the 2023 Annual Grammy Awards, he certainly did make a fashion statement with his significant other as they wore matching leather tracksuits. Pharrell wore red, while Helen Lasichanh wore all black.

A standout edition to complement Willaim’s attire was his Richard Mille RM 88 Smiley Tourbillon. A fitting watch for an artist that released the hit single “happy”. Against the red attire, the Richard Mille RM 88 Smiley Tourbillon certainly stood out from some distance thanks to its yellow accents and yellow strap. The dial of the Richard Mille RM 88 Smiley Tourbillon is anything but boring. Around the smiley face is an array of miniature sculptures. Limited to just 50 timepieces, the Richard Mille RM 88 Smiley Tourbillon is valued at 1.2 million USD.

Rick Ross – Jacob & Co. The Mystery Tourbillon White Diamonds and Rubies (Ref. SN800.30.BD.AC.A)

The Grammy-nominated Rap legend Rick Ross talked about celebrating 50 years of Hip-Hop while also performing the Grammy-nominated “God Did” single alongside DJ Khaled, Jay Z, Fridayy, and John Legend. His attire for this year’s Grammy Awards was a sparkly silver suit jacket, rhinestone encrusted rimless shades, a black bowtie, and of course the perfectly trimmed beard.

To match this outfit was the Jacob & Co. The Mystery Tourbillon White Diamonds and Rubies. This Jacob & Co. timepiece brings together high watchmaking. The brand explains this watch as “a world first with two linked central, back-to-back triple axis tourbillons, with high jewellery, as the case is invisibly set with baguette hexagonal diamonds and the dial is set with hexagonal, “overlapping” diamonds”. Time is indicated by the two mystery discs that turn and rotate around the twin triple-axis tourbillons. The Jacob & Co. The Mystery Tourbillon White Diamonds and Rubie are valued at 1.3 Million USD retail.

DJ Khaled – Rolex Daytona “Eye of the Tiger” Yellow Gold Diamond-set

It wouldn’t be watch-spotting at the Grammys without getting a wrist-check from Dj Khaled. The “God Did” producer bought big energy with his family in their custom Roberto Cavalli looks along with the air-jordans he and his two sons wore. Aiming to be the best dressed at the 2023 Annual Grammy Awards, the wife and two kids wore matching leopard print outfits white Dj Khaled wore all black.

To match his family, however, Dj Khaled wore the Rolex Daytona “Eye of the Tiger” Yellow Gold Diamond-set. This timepiece takes the Rolex Daytona and gives it a bedazzled makeover by having a tiger print, diamond-laced dial, gem-set yellow gold bezel with 36 trapeze-cut diamonds, and diamond hour markers as well. A total of 243 diamonds are used throughout the watch. While the dial is filled with diamonds, the sub-counters are kept bare, making it not only stand out but also easily readable. The “Eye of the Tiger” retails for 106,00 USD.
